William Bahnfleth is Professor and Director of the Indoor Environment Center in the Department of Architectural Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State) in University Park, PA, where he has been employed since 1994.  Previously, he was a Senior Consultant for ZBA, Inc. in Cincinnati, OH and a Principal Investigator at the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory in Champaign, IL.  He holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, where he also earned an undergraduate degree in music (pipe organ performance), and is a registered professional engineer.

 

At Penn State, Dr. Bahnfleth teaches undergraduate courses in HVAC fundamentals and controls and graduate courses in chilled water systems, hot water and steam systems, and indoor air quality.  His research interests cover a wide variety of indoor environmental control topics, including chilled water pumping systems, stratified thermal energy storage, protection of building occupants from indoor bioaerosol releases, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems, and others.  He is the author or co-author of more than 100 technical papers and 11 books and book chapters.  He consults regularly on the design of chilled water thermal energy storage systems and has been involved in more than 20 projects world-wide.

 

Dr. Bahnfleth is a fellow of both ASHRAE and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and is also a member of the International Society for Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ), the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA), Sigma Xi, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), and the Society of Building Science Educators (SBSE). He has served ASHRAE in a variety of capacities, including Student Branch Advisor, Chapter Governor, Technical Committee and Standing Committee Chair, and as Director-at-Large, Vice President, Treasurer, and 2013-14 Society President. He is the recipient of a 1st place ASHRAE Technology Award, Transactions Paper Award, and Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards.

Ο Χρήστος Σπίρτζης γεννήθηκε το 1969 στην Αθήνα, όπου μεγάλωσε και εξακολουθεί να ζει. Σπούδασε στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής του Δημοκρίτειου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης και από το 1995 εργάζεται ως ελεύθερος επαγγελματίας. Είναι παντρεμένος με τη Δήμητρα Φουφρή και έχουν δύο παιδιά, τον Παναγιώτη και την Κάλλια.

 

Κατά τη διάρκεια των φοιτητικών του χρόνων ανέπτυξε έντονη συνδικαλιστική δράση. Διετέλεσε Μέλος του ΔΣ του Συλλόγου Φοιτητών της Πολυτεχνικής Σχολής Ξάνθης και των οργάνων Διοίκησης του Δημοκρίτειου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης από το 1986 έως το1993.

 

Το 1996 ορίστηκε Επιμελητής της ΜΕ Νέων Μηχανικών του ΤΕΕ. Σε ηλικία 28 χρονών εκλέχθηκε για πρώτη φορά στην Αντιπροσωπεία του ΤΕΕ.

 

Από το 2000 έως το 2003 διετέλεσε Μέλος στη ΔΕ του ΤΕΕ, ενώ από το 1999 έως το 2008 ήταν Μέλος της ολομέλειας της Οικονομικής και Κοινωνικής Επιτροπής Ελλάδος, στην Εκτελεστική Επιτροπή της οποίας εκλεγόταν συνεχώς από το 2002 έως το 2007.

 

Από το 2007 έως το 2010 διετέλεσε Β' Αντιπρόεδρος της ΔΕ του ΤΕΕ, αρμόδιος για την Ενέργεια, την Ανάπτυξη, την Απασχόληση, το Ασφαλιστικό, την Άδεια Άσκησης Επαγγέλματος, τις Εκδόσεις, τη δεοντολογία Εκπροσωπήσεων και την Τράπεζα Πληροφοριών.

 

Εκπροσώπησε το ΤΕΕ σε κοινωνικές δράσεις για το πρώην Αεροδρόμιο του Ελληνικού και τους ελεύθερους χώρους, για την ελεύθερη πρόσβαση στις παραλίες και ήταν υπεύθυνος για κοινές δράσεις με άλλους Φορείς, όπως το Παρατηρητήριο Φυσικών Καταστροφών, το Παρατηρητήριο Οδικής Ασφάλειας και την προετοιμασία για διακριτό Υπουργείο Περιβάλλοντος και Χωροταξίας.

 

Ως Υπεύθυνος για την Ενέργεια συνέβαλε στην ολοκλήρωση του νομοθετικού και επιστημονικού έργου για την εξοικονόμηση ενέργειας και για την απόκτηση ενός μακροχρόνιου στρατηγικού ενεργειακού σχεδίου.

 

Συμμετέχει στην προσπάθεια για ένα σύγχρονο χωροταξικό σχεδιασμό της Χώρας για ένα άλλο ρυθμιστικό σχέδιο και μια διαφορετική αντίληψη για την ανάπτυξη, τον πόλεμο με τη γραφειοκρατία, τη βελτίωση της ζωής του Πολίτη. Από τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2010 είναι Πρόεδρος του Τεχνικού Επιμελητηρίου Ελλάδας.

Dr. Elias Yfantis is the Professor for Marine Engines at the Hellenic Naval Academy. He obtained his PhD degree in 1992 and his Engineering Diploma in 1987 both from School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. 

 

Prof. Yfantis has administrative experience at the Hellenic Naval Academy as the Academic Dean from 2004 until 2009, as a member of the Academy Council since 1999 and as the Head of the Section of Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering since 2007. 

In addition, he has research and teaching experience in the fields of Thermodynamics and Heat Transfer, Diesel Engines, Gas Turbines and Marine Energy Systems (1993-today) and cooperates constantly since 1993 with the Laboratories of Internal Combustion Engines and Thermal Turbomachines of the National Technical University of Athens in research projects related to the evaluation of the operational and environmental behavior of diesel engines, the development and application of diagnostic techniques for marine diesel engines and the development of gas turbines virtual laboratories. 

 

Prof. Yfantis also collaborates with Cranfield University as visiting staff and as a member of the International Advisory Board of the Center for Gas Turbine Diagnostics and Life Cycle Cost (2003-today) and he is the national representative in the NATO Science and Technology Organization (1997-today). In addition, he has been active member of international scientific organizations (ASME, SAE, New York Academy of Science, and The Combustion Institute/Greek Section). 

 

Prof. Yfantis has published more than 50 papers in international journals, international conference proceedings and national journals and participated in the organization of international conferences and reviewed research articles for numerous international journals and conferences. 

Finally, Prof. Yfantis is the editor-in-chief of the “Nausivios Chora”, the International Journal in Naval Sciences and Technology.

Konstantinos Karagiannis, was born in Athens in 1980, and holds a mechanical engineering degree with specialization in Energy and the Environment. His thesis research topic concerned the contribution of Building Automation to the Energy Efficiency of Buildings. In 2014, he received his MSc in Systems Engineering & Innovation at Imperial College London, investigating the impact of cyber security threats on Building Management Systems. Furthermore, he completed a career development module on Entrepreneurship in Renewable Energy, held by the Imperial College Business School and the Energy future Lab.

 

Since 2003, he has worked as a Building Services Engineer in various construction projects in Greece and later as the Technical Director of General Technology Ltd leading the execution of BEMS projects including design, programming, testing and commissioning. Additionally, he has worked as a Consultant in the area of Sustainability and Energy Efficiency in the Building Sector. His interests lie in the fields of Sustainability, energy efficiency, cyber security, smart grids and the smart cities.

 

Konstantinos has been an active member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) since 2012 and served in the past, as an elected member on the Board of Governors of the ASHRAE Hellenic Chapter and as the Chapter’s Technology Transfer Chair.

Dora Neroutsou is an Architect Engineer that graduated from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 2012. During her studies she was awarded with two scholarships for her performance in mathematics. She is a member of the Technical Chamber of Greece since 2012.

 

In 2013 she completed her M.Sc. degree in Environmental Design and Engineering in University College London, with Distinction. During her studies she developed a special interest in the passive house concept and the potential of retrofitting the existing building stock. Therefore, she investigated the topic for her Master Thesis, entitled ‘’Lifecycle Costing of Low Energy Housing Refurbishment: A case study of a 7 year retrofit in Chester Road, London’’.

 

She worked as a technical intern in the non – profit organization Zero Carbon Hub in London, where she was part of a multi disciplinary team that investigated the gap between predicted and measured energy consumption in new built houses in the UK. After that she worked as a Microclimate Consultant in WSP London.

 

Now she is working as a freelance architect while in parallel doing research on parametric design and its application on bio climatic design. She was recently acepted as a PhD candidate.

 Prof. Evangelos V. Hristoforou received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering School of the University of Patras in April 1984 (final year thesis in galvanometric sensor development). In September 1984, he became Chartered Engineer (MTEE 43556) and joined the Hellenic Air Force for two years (obligatory military service) working as Engineer and Second Lieutenant in the “202 State Factory of Airplanes”.

 

In September 1986, he joined the R&D department of “Peaudouce SA” and in September 1987 he accepted their research fellowship for postgraduate studies in engineering, joining King’s College, University of London, as Research Assistant till December 1990.

In November 1991 he was awarded the PhD degree from the University of London in Electrical & Electronic Engineering in the field of “Array Sensors Based on Amorphous Alloys”. From January 1991 till December 1993, he served as Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Greece, in the field of materials and sensors design, as well as in sensor calibration.

In April 1994, he was appointed as Assistant Professor at the TEI of Chalkis, Greece, where he became Professor in the same field in November 1998. In October 1999, he was elected Assistant Professor at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), in the field of Electronic Materials, while in November 2011 he was elected as Professor in the same position.

He is actively related to gas and oil industries, railway companies, pipeline works and maritime inspectors for the realization of magnetic non destructive methods and instruments to monitor the plastic deformation & stress tensor in critical steel structures, thus predicting the generation of cracks in them. His research projects include development of amorphous and nano-crystalline magnetic alloys and composites for sensor & bio-magnetic applications, as well as new materials and applications for renewable energy systems and energy storage.

During his 29-year engineering and research carreer, he has served as principal investigator in 5 projects and project coordinator in 21 projects, funded with more than €7Μ for the development of sensors, transducers and systems.

He has published more than 100 papers in international journals and more than 50 papers in international conferences. His papers have been cited more than 1300 times (h-index=21). He has given more than 30 invited talks in international conferences. He is the representative of Greece in the Universal Network of Magnetic NDE. He is reviewer in 21 international journals and 11 international conferences.

He is the Chair of the International Conference on Materials and Applications for Sensors and Transducers and the President of the International Advisory Committee of the European Magnetic Sensor and Actuator Conference. He is in the Editorial Board of “Sensor Letters” and “Journal of Electrical Engineering”, as well as Regional Editor in “Recent Patents in Material Science”. He is Vice-President in the Hellenic Society of Non-destructive Testing.

Aris Τsangrassoulis is an Associate Professor  at the Dept. of Architecture, University of Thessaly. He has received his Msc  degree and his PhD in Building Physics from the University of Athens. His research activity focuses on daylighting, shading, the development of techniques  for achieving  lighting energy savings and  the impact of building  design and operation on  thermal/visual comfort.

 

He currently runs the Unit of Indoor Environment and Low Energy Building Design, which is involved in national/international  research projects while  it supports consultancy work in daylighting/lighting  design and simulation assisted low energy building design. He has served in various postgraduate programs and research centers and in national and international committees as an expert member.

Organised by ASHRAE, the Hellenic Navy, the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) and the ASHRAEHellenic Chapter, the International Conference on Energy and Environment in Ships, will take place on May 22-24, 2015, in Athens, Greece.

 

The Conference seeks to bring together the various professionals involved in the shipping industry, both onshore and at sea, and to present the current state of the art and insight in future technologies and challenges related to HVAC, indoor environmental quality, energy safety and security.

 

The Conference will provide a comprehensive overview of the areas relevant to military and commercial ships. The conference format includes keynote addresses from invited speakers, oral presentations, poster sessions and a call for papers.

 

Presentations will address current practices, new approaches, methodologies, technologies and areas of improvement.

Cpt Bamplenis was born in Athens in 1963. He graduated from the Hellenic Naval Academy in 1986. He served on board of various types of ships as Engineering Officer and as Chief Engineer on HS OINOYSSAI (LST 104) and HS NEARCHOS (DDG 219).

 

During his career as Naval Engineer he graduated from the Surface Warfare Officer School  Command (1992, Newport  RI) as 1200psi plan inspector and he holds a DCA and Gas Free Engineering certificate from USN training center in San Diego.

 

He is certified from NATO training center in Oberammergau and HMS PHEONIX Maritime Warfare School as NBCD inspector.

 

He had a degree from the Hellenic Navy War College (2000) and the Hellenic Defense Academy (2010).

 

Also he holds an MA in Leadership Practice from Kingston University UK (2011).

 

In June 2014 assumed the position of the Technical Inspector in Hellenic Navy General Inspection Directorate.

Dr. Argiro Dimoudi is Assist. Professor at the subject ‘Science and technology of structures with emphasis on environmental design’ at the Department of Environmental Engineering at Democritus University of Thrace (GR). She has extensive experience on aspects of energy conservation in buildings, environmental friendly materials, simulation, testing on energy efficient and RES building components, energy regulations and auditing of buildings, microclimate and outdoor spaces bioclimatic design, energy consulting. Her experience is as academic staff, specialized scientific staff at the Ministry of the Environment, researcher at Research Bodies (CIENE-NKUA) and as the Head of the Department of Passive & Hybrid Solar Systems and of the Department of Active Solar Systems at the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources (CRES). She has experience as co-ordinator, project manager and researcher in research, demonstration and non-technological projects on energy and sustainability in buildings and cities. 

 

She has been an evaluator of projects’ proposals of EU and national programmes, reviewer of scientific papers in several international journals and conferences. She organized and participated as speaker in numerous Seminars, Conferences on Energy Efficiency issues. Author in several books, papers in international journals, conferences (International and National) and technical reports.

 

Member of the Technical Committees of the Technical Chamber of Greece (TEE) for the development of the Technical Guidelines (TG.TCG) in support of the ‘National Regulation for Energy Efficiency of Buildings.

V.S.K.V. Harish is enrolled as a research scholar at the Alternate Hydro Energy Centre of Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, the oldest technical institution of Asia. He has been working towards his doctoral studies (Ph.D.), on energy efficiency and demand side management in buildings sector under the supervision of Dr. Arun Kumar, since july 2012. His work is mainly focused on developing strategies to control the net energy consumption of buildings through implementation of demand side management techniques. This also includes development of energy models for buildings and simulating the same for different climate and occupancy parameters.

 

He was born in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1987 and received his Bachelors of engineering (B.E.) in Electrical and Electronics engineering from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, India in 2009. He secured first rank in his M.E. in power engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India in 2012.

 

He has been a student member of IEEE in 2012 – 13 and holds memberships of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) & Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) since 2012 – 13. He has published two international journal papers and presented his research works in several international conferences.

 

His research interests include energy efficiency, energy management, demand side management, integration of renewable energy into power system. He has been an active researcher since his under graduation conducting desk research, preparing research reports and coordinating with the industrial bureaucrats to evaluate the practical feasibility of the research works. During his academic career, he has been recognized for his extracurricular works such as sports, holding and organizing competitions and cultural fests through various medals and certificates.

Dr Dimitrios Koubogiannis is an Assistant Professor at the Energy Technology Engineering Department (School of Technological Applications) of the Technological Educational Institute (TEI) of Athens. He received his diploma in 1992 from the School of Mechanical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He also obtained his PhD from NTUA in 1998 (defending the thesis "Numerical Solution of the Navier-Stokes Equations on Unstructured Grids in a Parallel Processing Environment"). He did his military service during 1998-1999 and returned at NTUA as a post-doctoral researcher at the Laboratory of Thermal Turbomachines from 1999-2002. In the course of his doctoral thesis, as well as a researcher, he participated actively in a number of aeronautical research projects (financed either by EU or national funds or by companies). He then worked at the Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Electronics Department (2002-2005). From 2005, he is an Assistant Professor at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens, at the Energy Technology Engineering Department (School of Technological Applications), where he is responsible for the Laboratory of Steam Boilers & Thermal Turbomachines. His teaching activities include undergraduate courses at the Energy Technology Engineering Department (Thermodynamics, Steam boilers, Thermal Turbomachines I and II, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning II), and postgraduate ones (Ventilation and Air Conditioning, CFD) at the MSc in Energy Technology (in the context of a joint TEI Athens–Herriot Watt University postgraduate program). He is the author of 7 publications in scientific journals and 25 conference papers and has 57 citations (scopus). His research areas include CFD modeling for compressible and incompressible flows, heat transfer, aeroelasticity, reduced order modeling, optimization (flow control and design of aerodynamic shapes), simulation of power plant components and cycles, improved or novel power plants, unconventional refrigeration techniques (thermoacoustic and ejector refrigeration), lifecycle assessment and embodied energy issues in buildings and electro-mechanical components.

Sandro Nižetić was born in 1980, Split (Croatia) and in 2003 he was employed as research assistant at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture at University of Split. He has finished his PhD thesis at the age of 28 and the main topic of his thesis was oriented on the development and thermodynamic modelling of alternative renewable energy concept and today is still the youngest associate professor at his Faculty. He has more than ten years of teaching experience in Thermodynamics, HVAC systems, Refrigeration, Energy efficiency in Buildings and Rational energy usage. From 2009 to 2013 he was UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) project coordinator in Croatia on projects related to the implementation of Energy Efficiency measures in public buildings. He was also the head of the research project from 2008 to 2013 related to the development of a novel energy concept (solar power plant with short diffuser). He has visited several research and educational institutions worldwide as visiting researcher or as visiting lecturer. His research work is oriented on the applied and theoretical thermodynamics, implementation and development of the renewable energy sources and, in general, on energy efficiency in buildings. He is an author of more than twenty research papers and also several techno-economic professional case studies related, in general, to implementation and analysis of the HVAC systems in building applications. From 2005 he is a member of the HVAC association and also a member of World society of sustainable energy technologies and Croatian society of Mechanical Engineers. He is married and has one child.

Dr Aggeliki Kyriaki Skaropoulou has studied chemical engineering at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and graduated in 2002.


In 2007, she earned her M. Sc, in Science and Technology of Materials, an inter- departmental postgraduate course.


In 2009, she got her PhD thesis “Durability of limestone cement pastes, mortars and concretes exposed to sulfate attack”. Within the framework of her thesis, the research project, in which she has participated are:
- Seismic performance of recently prepared reinforced concrete,

- Characterization of the historic mortars of the Laskari house in the archeological site of Mystras. Suggestion of the new compatible mortars,
- Synthesis of hydraulic calcium silicate and calcium aluminate compounds using low temperature techniques. Alternative ways to produce clinker,

- Durability of concrete at temperature 10-90oC. Use of concrete tanks for seasonal thermal storage.


For 4 years she worked in an industry that produce and commercialize paints, mortars and adhesives. Her main activities and responsibilities at R&D and QC departments were the quality control of products, the improving product design and the development of new, the testing of new additives, the product control and the conformity to European norms.


She is working as a senior researcher at the school of chemical engineers, at National Technical University of Athens. Her project concerns the development of thermal insulation materials from inorganic materials.


She has published 20 papers in international journals and conferences.
