Se empezó a hablar en términos de crisis de energía después de la denominada, entonces (1973), crisis del petróleo. Evidentemente hay crisis de combustibles fósiles y nucleares, que son materiales existentes, en cantidades estrictamente limitadas, en la corteza terrestre y que los humanos hemos aprendido a utilizar (quemando carbón, petróleo, gas fósil y fisionando el U-235) para liberar la energía que contienen (básicamente en forma de energía térmica).


Pero, ¿realmente tenemos crisis de energía en el planeta Tierra? La respuesta es rotundamente NO, pues nuestro planeta, en su viaje alrededor del Sol, intercepta enormes cantidades de radiación solar, una cantidad apreciable de la cual llega a la superficie de la Tierra, calentándola y produciendo el movimiento de las masas de agua y de aire, además de permitir la función fotosintética de las plantas.


Si bien las necesidades de energía en el mundo fueron 17 TWaño/año en 2009 y se estima que podrían ser 28 TWaño/año en el año 2050, la cantidad de energía solar que el sistema atmosfera-Tierra intercepta, se estima en 174.000 TWaño/año, de los cuales llegan a la superficie de nuestro planeta 89.000. Considerando que, de ellos, se puedan captar 23.000 TWaño/año, podemos concluir que tenemos a nuestra disposición una cantidad de energía solar muy superior a las necesidades de los habitantes de nuestro planeta (del orden de 1.350 veces superior). Si además se añaden los flujos biosféricos que la radiación solar genera (agua, viento, biomasa, etc), podemos afirmar, sin lugar a dudas, que hablar de ‘crisis’ de la energía es un despropósito interesado. Interesado por aquellos sectores de la sociedad que impusieron, a lo largo del sigo XX, la identificación de energía con combustibles fósiles, como si solo ellos fueran capaces de proporcionar energía.


Comparando la cantidad de energía solar que tenemos a nuestra disposición, con las reservas de combustibles (fósiles y nucleares) vemos que éstas son bien nimias, pues solo serán capaces de proporcionar energía a la sociedad durante unos pocos años más.

 

El valor que tienen las fuentes de energía renovable para la humanidad es que mediante su captación, transformación y uso, ella recupera el papel que desde siempre ha tenido en la Tierra: el de transformadora de energía, integrándose plenamente el los ciclos biosféricos.

The European Union will spend about 700 million euros ($900 million) to build the world’s most powerful lasers, technology that could destroy nuclear waste and provide new cancer treatments. The Extreme Light Infrastructure project has obtained funding for two lasers to be built in the Czech Republic and Romania, Shirin Wheeler, spokeswoman for the European Commission on regional policy, said in a phone interview. A third research center will be in Hungary.

 

The lasers are 10 times more powerful than any yet built and will be strong enough to create subatomic particles in a vacuum, similar to conditions that may have followed the start of the universe. Eventually, the power of the light beams could be used to deteriorate the radioactivity of nuclear waste in just a few seconds and target cancerous tumors, the projects’s Romanian coordinator Nicolae-Victor Zamfir said in an interview. The Magurele research center, where the Romanian laser will be located, will consume about 10 megawatts of energy, enough to supply about 2,500 average U.S. households. Most of it will come from geothermal pumps installed at the site, where the laser is expected to become operational in 2017.

President Calderón and representatives of the Ministry of Energy and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) inaugurated the La Yesca dam this week after four years of construction. With a 1.329 billion cubic meter reservoir, the $768 million La Yesca will have an installed generating capacity of 750 MW. It is one of the five highest altitude dams in the world, and joins the Aguamilpa and El Cajón dams to form a hydrological system along the Río Grande Santiago that is essential to the hydroelectric efforts that Calderón’s administration prioritized.

 

Tamaulipas, a renewable energy pillar in Mexico, will be home to two new wind parks next year. El Porvenir plans to construct 30 turbines, each with a capacity of 1.8 MW in Reynosa, as well as a transformer substation to enhance the energy before it is sent out for use. Energía Renovable will be constructing its wind park in Llera, with the potential for 50 MW of wind energy. Both parks aspire to be functional by 2014. Representatives from the Ministry of Urban Development and Environment (SEDUMA) and government will be meeting to decide whether or not to sell this energy directly to consumers or to pass it through the Federal Electricity Commission. The use of these two wind plants will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 90.976 metric tons, sulfur dioxide by 442,400 metric tons and nitrogen oxide by 189.7 metric tons annually.

 

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) presented the “Strategy for Sustainable Production and Consumption” to encourage the creation of new markets and models of responsible sustainable consumption. This new policy intends to produce a researched set of actions that, when put into place by consumers and producers, will reduce negative environmental impacts. The policy also requires that producers adopt environmentally friendly practices in the creation of their products. The team that contributed to the strategy was comprised of representatives from the general public, higher education, business, non-government organizations, and international cooperation agencies.
