23 - Restorative Circles - Dominic Barter | Empathy Curriculum | Scoop.it
'A Restorative Circle is a community process for supporting those in conflict. It brings together the three parties to a conflict – those who have acted, those directly impacted and the wider community – within an intentional systemic context, to dialogue as equals. Participants invite each other and attend voluntarily.

The dialogue process used is shared openly with all participants, and guided by a community member. The process ends when actions have been found that bring mutual benefit.' The founder of this process, Dominic Barter told me it was like a series of empathy hot tubs.

The process is designed to model empathy, create empathy between the parties, and deepen empathy. There's then an empathic action component at the end.

What Are Restorative Circles?

- Pre-circle: facilitator meets separately with the parties involved

- Circle: circle process where each person is heard
- - Mutual comprehension Phase
- - Self-Responsibility
- - Agreed Action

- Post-circle: Agreements are reviewed

13 - The Benefits of Empathic Listening - Richard Salem | Empathy Curriculum | Scoop.it
Empathic listening (also called active listening or reflective listening) is a way of listening and responding to another person that improves mutual understanding and trust. It is an essential skill for third parties and disputants alike, as it enables the listener to receive and accurately interpret the speaker's message, and then provide an appropriate response. The response is an integral part of the listening process and can be critical to the success of a negotiation or mediation. Among its benefits, empathic listening;

- builds trust and respect,
- enables the disputants to release their emotions,
- reduces tensions,
- encourages the surfacing of information, and
- creates a safe environment that is conducive to collaborative = problem solving.
