SEO Basic Tips

One of my basic SEO tips – despite all the recent changes to Google with Google Instant and more, content is still the primary factor in determining how relevant a page is to a search query.

Content should be of decent length, around 400 words is good, and should be optimised around a single common theme.

Thus if you are writing about a new wine that is available, you can add in similar phrases on your content such as wine tasting, talk about brewing, talk about the cellar where its from, talk about the flavour and aroma.  And I don’t know much about wine, but I am sure I could write two pages for a site if I needed to.

Synonyms are very powerful tools and should not be overlooked.  Use Microsoft Word to give you a few ideas or use Googles Scribe tool as well.  Get into a routine of writing in a particular format -

1 or 2 paragraphs with Introbullet point list showing primary items or striking at particular pointsinclude the primary keyword in the bullet listthrow in a synonym or twoand then finish off with a paragraph or two of concluding copy, driving home your argument or calling your readers to take action (CTA)

Get into this habit earlier rather than later and your content will flow quite freely.  Content makes users happy, and content feeds the search engines.

How Much Does Seo Cost?

This is the most commonly asked question among those seeking to hire the services of an seo consultancy or agency.

In this post, i’ll explain;
-How most legitimate seo service providers price their services
-At the very end of this post, provide you with average pricing.

Please note, this post refers to how much seo costs in Australia.

Paying For Time

This is a stock standard way to charge for seo services. So how much per hour is reasonable? In general, pricing starts from $60 per hour, and can range up to $150 per hour, and higher. It truly depends on the scope of work required.

Paying for time is very reasonable – however you must ensure you identify what you can afford to pay, in line with your marketing budget and required return on investment.

Fixed, Set Pricing

Pre set pricing is very common in the SEO service industry. Set pricing can prove to be worth it, however you must be sure to find out what exactly the seo provider offers within the set pricing.

Many fixed-priced packages have different levels of service.

Typically, you’ll find an seo company offering 3 main packages; the more expensive, the more they claim they will do for your website.

In my opinion & experience, this is not fair to the customer. Pre-set, fixed pricing essentially throws out all unique aspects of a website, and treats is like any other. This is why many websites don’t get results when worked on by an seo company – their website is not being catered to properly.

Custom Pricing

Custom pricing is the best kind of pricing for seo. Usually, a custom price considers:
-Time required per week
-Size of the website
-Potential audience size
-Competition of your website
-Reverse any bad tactics if previously implemented
-Analyse results and identify bottlenecks, strengths etc

Custom pricing is often the most fair, as it objectively considers all the relevant factors for your website.

What About Paying Only When You Achieve “Results”?

A popular offering among large scale outsources seo firms is to only charge you when you reach page one. This is almost always not good.

When these companies say pay nothing till you reach page one – but they don’t mean your home page, or any other page that actually matters.

They simply mean as soon as ANY page (they’ll likely create one with low competition and with no purpose) hits page one, they’ll be asking for money.

It is often these companies who actually don’t even provide good results. Steer clear of any such company.

What To Watch Out For

-Steer clear from seo providers who don’t explain how they’ll approach your website
-Seo companies that clearly have extremely low fees
-Companies who use aggressive sales tactics, calls to sign you up

So How Much Does SEO Cost?

For a good service;
-Depends on size of website
-Many reputable providers start at $300-700 per month for smaller websites
-It GREATLY depends on the scope of the job

For a larger website
-One with many (500+) pages, huge target market/competition and so on,
-$800+ per month in many cases.

AdWords Keyword Tool

With the changes to the popular keywords tool, Google has effectively limited it for use by SEO specialists.  While still useful as a guide, one cannot nor do I think one could ever have relied on the numbers for anything else.  The numbers simply suggest what is profitable, now, in Google’s eyes and what will make money for Google and not necessarily the advertisers.

Still, with this in mind, what other choices does one have when doing keyword research? What other SEO Tools are there?

Keyword Discoverythis tool is rather limited and has limited data to call upon, but, at the same time is useful as a research toolKeyword SpyI have used Keyword Spy often, it is good in that it can show you Organic as well as PPC competitors.  Drawbacks are, like most tools, it is based on Google Data and draws all information from Google via an API – this means that eventually this data will be clouded just as it is for users of the AdWords tool.Market SamuraiSlow, ponderous and you need to focus a project all around a single keyword.  It too uses Google’s data – in the Traffic Estimator and displays results by the day.  Good things I guess is that the keyword research part of it is completely free.

So, other than tools, what other methods are there for keyword research?

General Intelligence and Common Sense – You have a site on a particular theme or subject or a set of themes.  Your main keywords are most likely staring you in the face.Wine? Red Wine, White Wine, New Wine, Wine (location) etc etc etcCompetitor SpyingOnce you have your list, run through Google with a few of them and look at the top ranking competitors.  Those that are actively doing the same thing you are – selling wine, writing about food and wine articles etc.  See what they are doing.  Here you can still use Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool to extract search terms from the website and this will give you up to 100 to work from.  If you have an AdWords account, you can sign in and see up to 800 permutations of the main keywords on the siteRule of 1-2Remember to use a Maximum of one or two related keywords for your Page’s Title (That which appears in the browser, not the title of the Article) and use synonyms or relative terms throughout the page.

These few steps will get you on your way to well researched and optimised articles and pages for your website.

Local Optimisation

It should not be a shock any longer that when you type in a local search such as Dentists Melbourne, that you are confronted with a new search engine results page layout on Google.  This new layout combines both the local ‘places pages’ results with natural organic results, usually with the top 7 (the old 7 pack) been at the top, but now in a way that looks just like the normal organic results with one minor difference.

The little red Letter and a link to the places page.

The map has also moved to above the sponsored listings on the right, and as you scroll down the page it scrolls with you… covering sponsored results as it goes down the page.  Now this is the second major update in a short few weeks – the first, Google Instant – sent shock waves across the SEO community and then simmered down…. and now this Maps Listing.  I for one do not think we have seen the last of this.

Take a look here:

Now more than ever, it is important for All Businesses to ensure they have a good Google Places aka Google Maps Listing.
