10 Strangest Vintage Effects of All Time | Guitar World

10 Strangest Vintage Effects of All Time | Guitar World | The Guitar Rig | Scoop.it

"Our selection for the strangest, most wonderful guitar effects ever unleashed upon the public"

Nick Bonko's insight:

The story of the ugly duckling really fits with this guitar gear story... Guitar World dives in to some of oddest guitar pedals of yester-year. You not only read up on the history, but Guitar World linked videos so that you can listen to these oddities. Although these pedals never blossomed into beautiful swans by being accepted into the mainstream retail market, they still have great "personalities" and allow for you to take a glimpse into some cool retro guitar history.

My personal favorite? The old Dearmond Tremolo control that not only sounds great, but looks like it's built to survive an early 1950's nuclear war!

Here's a look at the evolution of Jack White's pedalboards...from the red White Stripes board, to his unique "bronze" pedal layout with the Raconteurs and finally The Dead Weather... A fantastic in depth article that will have you adding more gear to your "guitar wish list"!

Nick Bonko's insight:

I can't explain to you how many times I've asked myself the question "where does Jack White get his tone!?" I remember this question first popped into my head almost a decade ago when I first heard and poorly attempted to play, (I was in 13 at the time) Seven Nation Army.

I finally did some research and voila, this fantastic article by dolphinmusic.co.uk came up.

This article details ALL of the pedals used during Jack White's career with both pictures and expert analysis. This was a great article and I found myself adding more pedals to my never ending guitar "wish list".

Uncommon Guitars: Vintage Gretsch Bacon Belmont

Uncommon Guitars: Vintage Gretsch Bacon Belmont | The Guitar Rig | Scoop.it

A few months ago I went to my local music store and looked through their small vintage guitar collection that they had.

After looking around, one guitar, the Bacon Belmont, caught my eye. I grabbed and it brought me to a whole 'nother world with its tone.

After doing some research this guitar is pretty uncommon. Many of these guitars went into produciton in the early 1950's.

This guitar has a very simple set up with vintage DeArmound pickups. The fretboard is made of rose wood and the body is crafted out of "curly maple" (I'll admit, I'm not quite familiar with this type of maple).

The following blog gives great incite about the history of Gretsch's relationship with Bacon and what the specs of this guitar are.

What type of unknown vintage guitars do you know? Respond in the comments!

Gretsch Guitar: G5191BK Tim Armstrong Electromatic

Gretsch Guitar: G5191BK Tim Armstrong Electromatic | The Guitar Rig | Scoop.it

Ther are not many artists like Tim Armstrong who've made their mark on punk history. Armstrong has been all over the world playing "head banger approved" punk.

So with this said, what is his guitar and can you own it?

The answer is yes...

Gretsch has just released a Tim Armstrong Gretsch Electromatic model. This guitar has classic Gretsch styling with a few specs that Armstrong added in. A few of the characteristics of this guitar include a maple neck, 22 jumbo frets, gold grover tuners and a pair of sweet Black Top Filter Tron pickups.

Some have dubbed this to be the best electromatic built by Gretsch.

U2 Exclusive: The Edge's stage setup revealed

U2 Exclusive: The Edge's stage setup revealed | The Guitar Rig | Scoop.it
Nick Bonko's insight:

It has taken me the longest time ever to try to find what U2's lead guitarist, The Edge, has for his setup.  Before I go into the article, I have to say, U2 is handsdown one of my favorite bands out there. I went to their recent 360 tour and it absoltuly blew me away.

The Edge's rig is massive and down right incredible.  From his 43 guitars he brings on the road to the truck loads of electronic gear.. All of these in the name of creating that iconic tone!

I know that some of these guitars and pedals I will never be able to afford.  BUT, its important to note that while reading this article, you can figure out what type of pedals are being used.  Pedal stations that Boss, Vox, etc. have on the market are pretty affordable and can come pretty close to what Edge does.

I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did!

Nick Bonko's insight:

Wow... I haven't thought of anything other than just.... WOW.

Fender has just released a limited edition Telecaster Thinline called the Super Deluxe. Is it safe for me to say that the name almost understates this beauty?

This axe has 21 freets, pearloid block inlays, maple neck, rosewood fretboard and two amazing Fidelitron Humbucking pickups on both the neck and the bridge.

I love that Fender made the "it's out for Christmas" tease. Just another guitar to add to the wish list!

Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Performance at Live 8; 8th Year Anniversary

"Time flies… as do pigs, of course. It's eight years since Live8 happened, with the emotionally charged performance of Roger, David, Nick and Richard, back together for one day as Pink Floyd."

- Pink Floyd F.B. page https://www.facebook.com/pinkfloyd?ref=ts&fref=ts

Nick Bonko's insight:

It's incredibly weird to say that it has been 8 years since Pink Floyd played at Live 8.

I remember watching this live when I was 13. Looking back, this performance still gives me the same feeling that I felt so many years ago. A sensation of energy that I believe can only be explained by listening to Gilmour's solo at the end of the song.

I can only imagine what it was like to be in the audience when this historic performance happened!

Is it your time to join the 3 string revolution?

For the past 150 years, the cigar box guitar is known for its interesting and primitive look.  The other day a friend of mine let me play his and I was immediatly hooked.  I honestly felt like I was brought to a different time...

Not surprisingly, these instruments are incredibly easy to build.

Danelectro Guitar and Bass December 2012 Catalog

Danelectro Guitar and Bass December 2012 Catalog | The Guitar Rig | Scoop.it

"All I want for Christmas is a retro guitar! "

Danelectro has just came out with their Guitar and Bass December 2012 catalog. There are some great pictures and descriptions of what guitars Dano is releasing this upcoming holiday season.

In my opinion, Danelectro is one of those small guitar companies that don't get enough attention! Dano has been famous for creating great guitars our of almost nothing! An example of this can be seen with their signiture lipstick pickup. During the early days of Danelectro, they produced pickups that were constructed from lipstick tubes. Since then, Dano has stayed with these pickups which have a great jangly tone.

These incredible guitars have been in the hands of great artists like Jimmy Page, Billy Bragg, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty.

Feel free to flip through and read up about the specs and looks of these classic guitars!

The Voyage-Air guitar is the first folding guitar that allows for guitar travelers to carry their six-string in a whole new way.  The shocking thing? IT KEEPS IN TUNE!

Recently, Voyage-Air went to Fender and secured a small deal with the multi-national guitar company.
