Eleanor Roosevelt: The Drive

Eleanor Roosevelt: The Drive | Eleanor Roosevelt | Scoop.it

Eleanor Roosevelt was born to the prestigious Roosevelt clan in 1884 and is perhaps best known for being the wife of Franklin Delano Roosevelt during his presidency in the 1930s. Eleanor Roosevelt, is possibly the most complex First Lady that this nation has ever known. She was driven not only by a sense of fulfillment but also by the discovery of her husband's affair. After the affair she became more involved in organizations such as the League of Women Voters and Women's Trade Union. Eleanor also had strong sense of social responsibility that was brought about by her uncle Theodore Roosevelt. This was a driving force because without it she would not have done things such as teach dance and calisthenics in low income neighborhoods. Finally and possibly the best driving agent she had was her unwillingness to bend to social pressures. "Your back has no bend," This quote is attributed to FDR talking to Eleanor which is very interesting because even though they were married but no longer together. It is quite evident that her uprising was drastically influential to her later life and her volunteering work. As a teenager she attended Allenswood Academy in London which is a well renowned finishing school. There she learned to be articulate and well rounded girl. Eleanor visited hospitals that were for veterans and criticized them for their treatments of veterans. Her greatest achievement was her drafting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, when she was appointed the Chairwomen of the UN Human Rights Commission.
