Stockport Council - Personalising Care Homes

Stockport Council - Personalising Care Homes | elderly people | Scoop.it

This is what personalisation is beginning to look like in one care home with residents suffering from dementia.

We want to do two things:

People living with dementia direct their own support on a day to day basis. We need to know what matters to each person (what is important to them) and what good support looks like. We record this as a one-page profile.

Staff are coached and supported by managers to deliver this.People having an upfront resource allocation that they can choose how it is used. This means that each person has two hours undivided time each month that they can spend doing something that is important to them. They can choose whatever they want to do, where they want (in the home or in the community) and also choose who they want to support them. The two hours can be used as two hours together, two times one hour or four half hours.

Erin Mee: The relentless loneliness endured by many older people has a solution – and it's as simple as saying hello

Here's an article that screams of the enormous failing of our current communities which continually facilitate the relentless loneliness of the elderly. Because of the constant refrain of autonomy and independence, thousands of old people are left to wile away the hours between visits by care workers, isolated from a peer group and forgotten by neighbours. Social media can't help this one - a simple hello might just do the trick though.

Forget 'social care pot of gold'

Forget 'social care pot of gold' | elderly people | Scoop.it

Here's a suggestion for getting away with cutting the social care budget - deny that that people need long term social care as they get older. That's what Sarah Pickup (president of the association of adult social services) argues here. If you decide there's no need then there's no service to provide.

Instead you offer 'enablement' which sounds to me very much like 'flexi-care' or 'short, sharp, shocks' of rehabilitation. Great for thru-put, great for stats but less effective for community health.
