Educators, policymakers say Problem Solving is important, not emphasized in school | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Nearly all educators and policymakers, 97 percent and 96 percent, respectively, say that it's important for students to learn creative problem-solving skills in school, according to a new international survey from Adobe. But approximately two-thirds — 69 percent of educators and 60 percent of policymakers — say that current curricula do not emphasize creative problem solving enough.

The groups surveyed agreed that jobs requiring creative problem solving are less likely to be affected by automation (76 percent of educators and 74 percent of policymakers), that students who excel at creative problem solving are more likely to have higher-earning jobs (86 percent for educators and 85 percent of policymakers) and that such skills are currently in high demand among senior level and higher paying positions (85 percent of educators and 84 percent for policy makers).

If your Edtech product won’t solve actual problems, we don’t need It

If your Edtech product won’t solve actual problems, we don’t need It | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Educators have an endless pool of potential edtech products they can choose from to fill their classroom needs. They could spend hours wading through potential options, weighing the pros and cons of an expensive program. However, the reality is that very few of the available edtech programs are currently designed to solve an actual classroom problem. Teachers are being forced to use programs that don’t do anything to aid their instruction on a daily basis.

27 characteristics of Authentic Assessment

27 characteristics of Authentic Assessment | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

What is authentic assessment?

Almost 25 years ago, I wrote a widely-read and discussed paper that was entitled: “A True Test: Toward More Authentic and Equitable Assessment” that was published in the Phi Delta Kappan. I believe the phrase was my coining, made when I worked with Ted Sizer at the Coalition of Essential Schools, as a way of describing “true” tests as opposed to merely academic and unrealistic school tests. I first used the phrase in print in an article for Educational Leadership entitled “Teaching to the (Authentic) Test” in the April 1989 issue.

(My colleague from the Advisory Board of the Coalition of Essential Schools, Fred Newmann, was the first to use the phrase in a book, a pamphlet for NASSP in 1988 entitled Beyond standardized testing: Assessing authentic academic achievement in secondary schools. His work in the Chicago public schools provided significant findings about the power of working this way.)

Are we educating for Life or School?

Are we educating for Life or School? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Whether it’s my Uber driver, a parent, teacher, student etc. It seems that more often than not in various conversations I have people tell me that they (or their children) don’t “learn that way” in reference to how we traditionally do school. People explain that they are visual or like to work with their hands or need to talk to others and try some things out, which they often explain, is not how they were supposed to “learn” in school. Instead, success was determined by sitting still, individually completing endless packets or worksheets, and providing the right answers on the tests.

Most teachers- both new to the field and the ones that are experienced are apprehensive at the moment that they do not have the requisite skills and training that is necessary to educate their students properly with technology. Some even think that, education technology may somehow disrupt their teaching methods or even go as far as replacing them in the classroom.

Cómo aprender sin estudiar | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Inside the school Silicon Valley thinks will save education

Inside the school Silicon Valley thinks will save education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Founded in 2013 by former Google head of personalization Max Ventilla, AltSchool has poached high level executives from Google and Uber. It’s got users—in this case, parents—applying by the thousands. It’s actually making money. And as of today, Mark Zuckerberg just became one of its largest investors.

The young Facebook founder is emerging as one of the country’s most generous philanthropists and a leading activist for school reform, and AltSchool appears to fit into his vision. Through his education-focused non-profit, Zuckerberg has contributed a large portion of a new $100 million round of venture funding to AltSchool. The round, which AltSchool announced today, also includes existing investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Peter Thiel's Founder’s Fund, as well as eBay founder Pierre Omidyar and Laurene Powell Jobs, widow of the late Steve Jobs. The investment brings AltSchool’s total funding to $133 million. But more importantly, it means AltSchool has been anointed by the top minds in Silicon Valley as the best hope for the future of education.

EdTech Research Study: What really has an impact?

EdTech Research Study: What really has an impact? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

When making decisions about how your school and district use technology in classrooms, there are many things to consider. During my travels to schools and conferences in different corners of the country, the conversation often comes back to one topic. What actually works? How can we get more impact from our EdTech?

If you are a regular follower of my blog, the phrase “tasks before apps” should sound familiar. I use it all the time as a way to refocus conversations around the purposeful use of digital tools. So earlier this year, the folks at SMART reached out to share research findings on educational technology. I wanted to learn more about their findings. Through a survey of hundreds of education leaders in ten countries, this study examined links between EdTech and learning outcomes.

How to keep the Humanity in online courses

How to keep the Humanity in online courses | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

If you have ever taken or considered taking an online course, you are well aware of some of the challenges and criticisms that online courses face. Some consider the fact that there is no physical, literal classroom a disadvantage. Others consider it an advantage. When taking an online course, it is true that there are no students in the desks next to you, and that there may be hundreds or even more than a thousand students participating in the same class. The lack of a physical classroom, however, does not have to be a disadvantage. One advantage of online courses is that students from all over the world with a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, and languages are coming together to learn, collaborate, and share their ideas together.

It is ultimately your responsibility to take charge of your own lifelong learning – that is your own continuous self-improvement (for the now) and self-development (for the future). In 2017, a Foundation of Young Australians (FYA) report analysed over 20 billion hours of work completed by 12 million Australian workers across 400 occupations each year to predict the skills and capabilities that will matter most in 2030.

The report found that automation is going to change what employees do in almost every occupation.
