Personalize Learning: Access, Engage, and Express: The lens for teaching and learning

Personalize Learning: Access, Engage, and Express: The lens for teaching and learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Access, Engage, and Express (TM) is the lens for understanding how anyone learns best. The reason we came up with these three words was to help educators easily understand their learners using this lens. We want Access, Engage, and Express to be an integral part of their daily approach to teaching and learning. Using Access, Engage and Express was developed from the Universal Design for Learning® (UDL) principles that are based on neuroscience and how we learn.

In a globalised and networked world, what is the unique value a university can bring? Introducing open knowledge institutions

In a globalised and networked world, what is the unique value a university can bring? Introducing open knowledge institutions | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Digital ubiquity has disrupted the traditional university model. The internet has shifted the balance of a tension between control and disorder in knowledge production, with many of the opportunities the web brings leading directly to many of the challenges we now need to address. Lucy Montgomery and Cameron Neylon advocate for the idea of universities as Open Knowledge Institutions, which would support and provide spaces for the world’s creative diversity to contribute to a common stock of global knowledge. This means reinventing some of our ideas about what university is, or should be, while also recognising that this change has to be an evolution, not a revolution.

Best practices for Teaching Online | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

One of the most common questions an Instructional Designer is faced with is, “How can I enhance the student experience in my online course?” Often times, instructors wish to replicate the activities they do in face-to-face courses in the online environment but are not sure where to begin. One recommendation is to consult an instructional designer. We also strongly encourage instructors to participate in the Master Class for Teaching Online, an online workshop designed to facilitate peer sharing of strategies for teaching online. The workshop is facilitated by a team of instructional designers and touches on several best practices. The graphic presented here lists seven best practices for teaching online. How technology is enabling new ways of writing

How technology is enabling new ways of writing | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

We could be on the brink of a fundamental change in how we produce and use written material.

Changes and improvements in writing technologies have occurred at several points in human history. Our instruments of handwriting have evolved from imprints in clay to brushes and ink, to the now-ubiquitous ballpoint pen (a surprisingly difficult device to perfect). Print and digital reproduction have allowed texts to be mass produced and distributed to audiences numbering in the billions; and smartphones have given us new ways to express ourselves in writing, as evidenced by the widespread use of emoji.

Using Mobile to capture Informal Learning

Using Mobile to capture Informal Learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Formal learning has a tendency to be just that – formal – and sometimes it fails to speak to the learner in a way they can identify with. The challenge to provide a regular stream of relevant content makes it tempting to tap the well of informal learning.

With informal learning, all of the ‘content’ is tailored by the audience, for the audience. If you rely on a colleague to support you in your job, it’s in your own best interest to make sure that colleague is up to speed. If you see a way for them to improve how they do their job, you’ll communicate it in terms they’re familiar with.

The future of education is virtual

The future of education is virtual | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Massive open online courses (MOOCs) were supposed to bring a revolution in education. But they haven’t lived up to expectations. We have been putting educators in front of cameras and shooting video — just as the first TV shows did with radio stars, microphone in hand. This is not to say the millions of hours of online content are not valuable; the limits lie in the ability of the underlying technology to customize the material to the individual and to coach.

The Kirkpatrick Model for dummies

The Kirkpatrick Model for dummies | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

In short, so that you can improve the learner experience and achieve the goals of your training. Good Instructional Design never really comes to an end; your content can always be refined and improved. If you simply finish a project and move on to the next one, you will never learn; if there are problems with the content you’re producing, they will persist through the content you produce in the future. As designers and developers, it is our duty to be learning ourselves and to be continually improving what we create. We owe it to our clients and to the people learning from our courses.

As we go through these levels, ask yourself where you would place your current evaluation of your training. And what could you do to move it on to the next level?

In “How A Good Teacher Becomes Great,” we theorized that good teachers “know which assessments are for “show,” and which are for “go”—that is, which look good from 10 feet, and which provide visibility for both the student and teacher where the learning needs to go next,” and that they model curiosity, collaborate with other great teachers, and “measure understanding in diverse ways.”

Below are 20 observable characteristics of effective teaching. Pair this with our characteristics of a highly-effective learning environment, and you’ll have a nice one-two punch to reflect on your craft. We’ve highlighted a few of our favorites to get you started.

The purpose driven Instructional Designer

The purpose driven Instructional Designer | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It’s probably the most common question asked in social situations: "So, what do you do for a living?". For years, I would stumble through my answer. If I said, "I’m an Instructional Designer", it would often be met with a confused expression. If I said, "I work in corporate training", the response was one of two reactions: Either I was told of their favorite/least favorite training experience, or I was asked what kind of training I facilitated – sales training, leadership training, etc.

But, to my delight, this problem was solved for me on Mother’s Day a few years back. Early in the morning, along with the obligatory breakfast in bed, I received a gift from my daughter. It was a simple questionnaire entitled "All about Mommy!" with questions like "What is your mommy’s favorite food?", "What do you like to do best with your mommy?", etc.

Will Artificial Intelligence disrupt Higher Education?

Will Artificial Intelligence disrupt Higher Education? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the landscape of higher education. According to Dr. Keng Siau, artificial intelligence will “perform an array of general tasks with consciousness, sentience and intelligence.” That could mean that higher education may no longer be the path to a professional career.

University degrees have always led to professional careers; AI may change that path and offer new forms of learning. Ultimately, AI will change the way colleges have approached education.
