How MOOCS are bridging the divide between eLearning and Universities

How MOOCS are bridging the divide between eLearning and Universities | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Online degrees accredited by respected institutions are on the rise, opening doors for students worldwide to earn comprehensive higher educations. There have still been many skeptics in the upper echelons of traditional academia, who see online learning as a disruptive and possibly detrimental force to education. However, maybe the tide is turning.

The progression of MOOCs over the past decade has given e-learning providers and edtech companies reason for hope. First introduced in 2006, the height of the MOOC frenzy is often traced to 2012, with the launch and rise of Khan Academy, and hundreds have since followed the model of providing short, and often free, courses online.

From Open Innovation to Change of Culture” el pasado 5 y 6 de Octubre en Valkiria Hub.

Opening up Education: The OpenEdu Framework

Open education is an umbrella term under which different understandings of open education can be accommodated. It goes beyond open educational resources (OER) and open research outputs to embrace strategic decisions, teaching methods, collaborations between individuals and institutions, recognition of non-formal learning and different ways of making content available.

Open education is a way of carrying out education, often using digital technologies. Its aim is to widen access and participation to everyone by removing barriers and making learning accessible, abundant, and customisable for all.

It offers multiple ways of teaching and learning, building and sharing knowledge. It also provides a variety of access routes to formal and non-formal education, and connects the two.

Stakeholders must explore ways in which to support opening up education. Dialogue must be sought to form a common vision for opening up education in Europe. OpenEdu Policies is a project running from January 2016 to March 2017 aiming to scope, refine and propose policies on opening up education for both policy makers in Member States and at European level.

The policies proposed will cover the 10 dimensions of open education and will be based on the OpenEdu framework for openness in higher education (Forthcoming JRC report: Opening up Education: A Support Framework for Higher Education Institutions).

Search for Training Needs Analysis

Search for Training Needs Analysis | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Is your organization experiencing performance or productivity issues? Perhaps your compliance requirements are not being met. Or maybe your training catalogue has “leaky boat syndrome,” whereby additions are made to plug knowledge holes. However, what you really need to do is stop the water seeping in and give it an overhaul! If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, your organization could benefit from a Training Needs Analysis (TNA). A Training Needs Analysis is a structured process for identifying gaps in employee training and related training needs, usually performed by experienced learning and development consultants.

4 video making tips for Instructional Designers

4 video making tips for Instructional Designers | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It’s generally agreed that video has become the favorite of the new generations. People all over the world watch short films on subjects that interest or amuse them – cats have become real stars online due to this technology and more and more internet users produce and upload their own materials, sometimes attaining great success.

All smartphones have cameras and anyone can become a director right away. There was even an awesome project that asked people all over the world to send short videos of themselves answering the same few questions and the end result – Life in a Day is very personal and touching.

So filming itself is easy but those of us who have at some point tried to actually ‘make a video’ with a story that needed to convey some meaning found that it was not so easy.

| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Redefining the relationship between teachers and students leading to mastery learning

Redefining the relationship between teachers and students leading to mastery learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

In Visible Learning for Teacher: Maximizing Impact on Learning, John Hattie describes the conditions that lead to identifying learning intentions and success criteria.  He describes the learning equation as five variables that a teachers needs to understand and design around.

Challenge represents a design criteria that every teacher faces: designing a learning experience that is appropriately challenging for each student.  Instead of designing a lesson that targets one level of challenge, differentiate the lesson to meet the readiness represented by the diverse learners in the classroom.  The challenge has to be developmentally appropriate so that each learner stays engaged.  Hattie writes about the challenge creating dissonance for the student such that errors occur in a supportive environment where the teacher is side-by-side with the student, providing guidance, support, and effective feedback.

[Infographic] The rise of the live Online Learning Facilitator

[Infographic] The rise of the live Online Learning Facilitator | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The virtual classroom is, without doubt, a highly powerful tool in the arsenal of the modern learning professional. It continues to be adopted by organisations worldwide and is, in many cases, the go-to solution for interactive, synchronous elements of blended learning interventions. Agile learning delivery using virtual classrooms is increasingly seen as the perfect way to keep with the pace of business change. Face-to-face classroom courses can be cumbersome and costly to continuously update and change. Conversely, live online learning in virtual classrooms engages learners in short, focused sessions which fit into busy schedules and can be easily adapted. Live online learning fosters learner autonomy, self-pacing, personalisation and shorter times-to-competence.

Next generation learning

Next generation learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Learning 2.0 is socially much richer and more participatory, and relies more on interaction with other learners than any previous learning approach. This change has been realised through access to inexpensive internet tools that offer easy ways to connect with others of similar interest. There is a growing understanding that it's not so much what you know anymore, but who you know. No longer is the computer your only mind tool and extension of your memory - now you can also call on everyone else in the world. Social media are enabling learners everywhere to connect and work together with each other, forming convenient communities and networks of shared interest. The full power of the Learning 2.0 approach has yet to be realised, but already we are seeing radical shifts in the way learning is conducted. I also argued that if we view sequenced versions of the Web, based on the way learners use it, we will inevitably have to think of Learning 3.0, and beyond.

Countries which are leading the way in Online Education

Countries which are leading the way in Online Education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The rise in its preferability is mainly because of its ease and convenience. The flexibility of online education (i.e. anytime anywhere, any pace) allows students to plan to work and continue their higher education simultaneously with ease.

Online education come in two major forms - one that is for credit courses where students enroll themselves mainly for credits and the second type is for professional training and certification preparations where the purpose is to prepare students for certification exams. In terms of popularity, at this moment the second type of online courses are a little ahead because students mainly prefer to work as well as study alongside to develop their skills.

Even though the rise in the trend of online education is catching up across the world, there are just few countries which have completely stormed in this area. These top countries who are also the leaders of online education have a complete pack in the world of online education. Hence they have soon become a role model for the other countries who too wish to be in the same league.

What will the future of employment in 2030 look like? A 2017 report from Pearson and the U.K.-based innovation foundation Nesta predicts what the working world will be like in the United States and United Kingdom when the current elementary school students begin their careers. This time period spans only the initial stage of their employment, yet researchers project a future—a little more than a decade away—quite different from the present: a workplace strongly shaped by globalization, data-intensive decision making, advances in digital tools and media, and artificial intelligence.

4 fantastic Rubric Tools for Google Docs

4 fantastic Rubric Tools for Google Docs | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It has been said that grading is more of an art than a science. It can be easy to perform mathematical gymnastics on a stack of numbers, and then feel like we have arrived at a truly accurate grade because the result goes out to three decimal places.

In reality points and percentages can only go so far when evaluating student work. If possible, we can benefit greatly from taking a step back to get a holistic view of what a student has produced. Rather than just counting the number of problems they have missed, we (and they) are better served when we look for the patterns that reveal the reasons behind the mistakes.

One tool that can help move us closer to a fair assessment of student learning is a rubric. A rubric is an evaluation tool that uses a range of criteria to assess a student's skills or performance on a continuum from excellent to poor, with qualitative descriptions for the different levels.

As useful as rubrics can be though, since they are more sophisticated, they can also be a challenge to manage in a digital world. Thankfully there are many tools that we can use to create, deploy, and grade with electronic rubrics. In this blog post we will look at four such rubric tools and how they work. The tools range from simple to complex, so hopefully you will find one that matches your needs, or inspires you to try out a rubric for an upcoming assignment.

Old-school vs New-school workplace learning

Old-school vs New-school workplace learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it
Corporate training is in itself a rather old concept. Businesses understood very early on that they need to offer development opportunities to their workers if they wanted to be successful in their respective fields.

Corporate training is a win-win for both the organization and employees.

It develops and refines the skills of employees, boosts their morale, keeps them motivated, improves their performance and their work productivity. It gives them a sense of achievement and makes them feel productive, skillful employees. The increased productivity through highly trained staff brings more revenues to the company and improves business profitability.

So, bottom line is, corporate training is a great thing and has brought nothing but benefits for both employers and employees throughout the years.

There are, however, voices who claim that old-school training has become obsolete and needs to be completely replaced by new-school learning and development programs.

Social Media helps students learn scientific argumentation better, study says

Social Media helps students learn scientific argumentation better, study says  | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Adults often bemoan the amount of time young people spend staring at a screen and browsing social media. But social media can not only be a way to teach students elements of the scientific process, those who took part in a program to learn scientific argumentation through social media learned the components of argumentation better than their peers who did not, a University of Kansas study has found.

KU researchers designed a curriculum unit to engage nearly 400 ninth-grade biology students in learning about scientific argumentation through social media use with their teachers and classmates. Argumentation is a key element of both Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. The researchers have since authored a chapter for the book "Digital Tools and Solutions for Inquiry-Based STEM Learning," an article in the Journal of Education in Science, Environment and Health and an article in Educational Media International, a Taylor & Francis online journal outlining the study, its results and how teachers can implement similar practices in their classrooms.

Blended Instruction vs Blended Learning

Blended Instruction vs Blended Learning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Schools continue to make investments in technology to engage students better, improve outcomes, and prepare all learners for the new world of work.  We are beginning to see more and more innovative uses of technology not just to personalize, but also to make the learning process more personal.  When a solid pedagogical foundation is in place, the stage is set to challenge students to demonstrate thinking and learning in ways that we could never have imagined a few short years ago. This, combined with relevance grounded in authentic contexts and applications, empowers students to own their learning.

As I continue to think through the use of technology in schools I am always drawn back to this guiding question – How can students use technology in ways that they couldn’t without it?  To improve the learning experience for kids, we must continue to develop ways where technology becomes a ubiquitous component of our work, but also leads to a demonstrated improvement in practice.  Here is where the tool supports or enhances the pedagogical technique to aid in conceptual mastery, construct new knowledge, or demonstrate learning through the creation of a learning artifact. One such method that is rapidly gaining traction is blended learning.
