How Can We Maximize the Potential of Learning Apps?

How Can We Maximize the Potential of Learning Apps? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Let’s dive directly into the world of educational apps. Our survey suggests that the majority — one might even say, the vast majority — of educational apps encourage pursuit of the goals and means of traditional education by digital means. They constitute convenient, neat, sometimes even seductive pathways to accomplish what were already goals in an earlier era: mastering concepts, learning arithmetical operations, identifying geographical locations or historical figures or key biological or chemical or physical processes. We could dub them “digital textbooks” or “lectures” or “pre-programmed educational conversations.” Decades ago, major behaviorist B. F. Skinner called for teaching machines that would automate the traditional classroom, allow students to proceed at their own rate, provide positive feedback on correct answers, and either repeat a missed item or present that item via another pathway. Those sympathetic to Skinner’s brand of psychology and to its associated educational regimen would easily recognize many apps today and would likely nod in approval at their slick, seductive interfaces.

The growing use of Transcreation in eLearning

The growing use of Transcreation in eLearning | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

30 years ago, you could probably get away with terrible, stilted translations that weren't checked for authenticity and not tailored to the target international audience. As the world gets smaller, however, that’s not going to cut it.

eLearning is a fast growing industry, and as people interact with each other across borders, it’s becoming essential that not only the language be accurate and precise, but the usage of the language be appropriate to the target location and culture.

You thought that translation was all about the grammar? Think again. People who want to succeed in the global eLearning world across international markets need more than just grammatically accurate translations. They need translation plus content that targets the local culture plus native messaging. Taken together, this new phenomenon is called transcreation in eLearning.

¿Qué es esto de la tercera misión? - Universidad, sí

¿Qué es esto de la tercera misión? - Universidad, sí | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Will online ever conquer Higher Ed?

Will online ever conquer Higher Ed? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The latest data on the nation’s college and university enrollment shows that online is steadily climbing its way up to more than a third of the student population—as face-to-face continues to plummet. That’s a surprising turn in the long-time arc of academic population growth.

If online weren’t in the picture, on-campus enrollments, as reported in the most recent U.S. Department of Education 2016 results, would have fallen by more than 1.5 million between 2012 and 2016, says Jeff Seaman, co-director of the Babson Survey Research Group, who has been tracking the country’s virtual education lifeline for 15 years. “Without digital, higher ed would be in far worse shape than it is now,” he adds. “Distance ed is saving higher ed.”

4 ways Universities are driving innovation

4 ways Universities are driving innovation | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The digital revolution is not only here, it is accelerating every day. Advances in automation, the digitisation of information, unprecedented access to data and the democratisation of knowledge are transforming every sector of our economy – from healthcare to transportation to energy and beyond. The scope, scale, and ubiquity of these disruptions is truly unprecedented.

According to data from a recent McKinsey study, a dozen technologies, including genomics, energy storage, and automation, will drive major economic and societal transformation in the next several years. With a potential economic impact between $14 trillion and $33 trillion a year in 2025, the value of these emerging technologies could constitute one third of global GDP.

Breakout Rooms — Future of online learning through collaboration

Breakout Rooms — Future of online learning through collaboration  | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Technology has played a big role in improving people’s everyday lives. It has upgraded almost all aspects of human existence — from complex activities like how we interact with each other and how we do our work, to the mundane tasks like shopping and cooking.

The benefits that technology has brought to us today is tremendous. Industries such as healthcare and transport are rapidly advancing. Learning and education are also not exempt; with both also having been revolutionised by technology. The propagation of online learning, learning apps, and interactive breakout rooms are clear indicators that tech has, indeed, not only elevated human lives, but transformed institutions as well.

All power to the learner: Social Learning and more

All power to the learner: Social Learning and more | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Remember when media and networking were things in their own right, before they became synonymous with ‘social’? The fact that tech allows us such easy access to media and our networks in everyday life has changed how we consume information and entertainment, how we keep in touch, and how we present ourselves to the world.

And now we’re adding that word ‘social’ in front of learning too. In fact learning socially is natural and fundamental to the human experience – we don’t need technology to facilitate it. But, just as the phrase ‘social media’ creates a certain amount of pressure to ‘join in’, having tech available to make it easier just sharpens the sense that social learning is something we should be doing.

In many respects we’re only scratching the surface of the opportunities opened up by the ease and speed of access to digital learning and resources, not least by the untapped potential of technology-enabled social learning.

K-12 schools, Universities boost Cybersecurity Education to close the skills gap

K-12 schools, Universities boost Cybersecurity Education to close the skills gap | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Experts at the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) conference in November, discussed how creating opportunities for K-12 students to learn the basics of network security, cryptography and cyberethics are critical to encouraging academic study and career awareness, Education Week reported on its Digital Education blog.

With recent research indicating that most young women are deciding against careers in cybersecurity before age 16, it’s not surprising that the experts at the NICE conference insist that cybersecurity education must come earlier in high school.

Sheila Boyington, the president of Thinking Media, who delivered the keynote address, told Education Week that one of the best ways for young students to engage with cybersecurity is to see how the skills can help them solve real-world problems because it illustrates the relevancy of learning the skills.

Various studies reflect that out-of-school time programs help to a greater deal to develop the basic academic skills of at-risk students. Children falling in the age bracket of 5-14 years, are the ones, who spent at least 80% of their time out-of-school.

When you are in the midst of the learning experience, notice what makes it meaningful to you. When the meaning is in place, is the learning process more enjoyable? Do you have more drive to stick with it?

Then, notice what makes you feel frustrated. Did you lose your sense of purpose about the task? Did the meaningful element disappear? If so, in what ways might you reclaim that connection?

| Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

With the increase in online classes being offered by higher education institutions and the convenience and flexibility it affords (particularly for adult learners), it is important that institutions hire, train, and retain high-quality, student-centric online faculty. Just like on-ground students, online students need instructors who are passionate, organized, creative, and manage the (virtual) classroom effectively. Unfortunately, from time to time, online faculty can struggle with burnout, which may make them less effective instructors.

Teaching — It’s about Inspiration, not information (Tina Seelig)

Teaching — It’s about Inspiration, not information (Tina Seelig)    | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Teaching is really about inspiration, not information. Effective teaching focuses on why and how, not what. The goal should be to spark each student’s imagination, to find a hook in their heart and mind so that they feel a need to learn the material. The rest is easy, because the student then drives his or her learning. My role as a teacher is to ask provocative questions, and to help the students make a path toward the answers. If they are motivated to find the path, they will carve it themselves. If I have to pull out a mental machete to expose the path, then I haven’t done my job.

10 ways to support the development of your digital learning team in 2018 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

As learning professionals, we create and curate learning but our own skill building is often forgotten about. Ironic, right?

When I first started in the field, I was afraid to build my skills at work. I didn’t have a portfolio outside of work. When it came to being an Instructional Designer, I felt like I was on an island all by myself. I had no idea that there was a whole world of learning professionals out there. I had no idea there were so many resources out there to help develop, well…me.

I’ll never be done learning or developing my skills. I’ve made it my mission to continually share what I’m learning. I’ve also made it a mission to help other learning designers find their passion in the field. Digital learning is my passion and I’ve found a lot of ways to develop my skills in the digital learning space. This article isn’t just for those who lead a team, however it’s always really a nice thing when you’ve got the nod of approval from leaders. As learning professionals we should be demonstrating and advocating for a culture of learning.

Here are a few things you can support your team on, in order to develop their skills in the digital learning space.

Whenever we analyze the landscape of higher education technology, we find a range of trends in various stages of development. There are topics with real staying power, such as learning space design (which has factored into our trends list for several years). Others have evolved over time: Virtual reality made our list in 2016, then expanded to include augmented and mixed reality in 2017, and this year makes up part of a broader concept of immersive learning. And while some topics, like video, have been around for ages, new developments are putting them into a different light.

To help make sense of it all, we asked a panel of four IT leaders from institutions across the country for their thoughts. Here's what they told us.

University of Puerto Rico must focus on skills needed for recovery

University of Puerto Rico must focus on skills needed for recovery | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It is certainly uplifting to read about the courage of University of Puerto Rico students who intend to stay and rebuild (“The Fight to Rebuild a Ravaged University,” The Chronicle, January 5). In the short run, however, they will have to build a very different university than the one they had been attending before Hurricane Maria.

Bluntly speaking, educational resources will have to be redirected to providing a large number with essential skills that PR will need to recover. These scarce resources must be used to train those who will provide the basics — healthy food, fresh water, shelter, electricity, clothing, child care, health care, and security. Along with their studies, these students likely will be working part-time alongside skilled craftsmen who are helping the island recover.
