I wonder how many people could actually read the report and comment it since it seems to be only available to paying members... I went through the whole registering process until dead end of "Sorry for the inconvenience, this item is available to members only"... quite frustrating :((

How Can Media Literacy Save our Democracy?

How Can Media Literacy Save our Democracy?  | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Can media literacy save our democracy?  You bet.

Democracy depends on a well-informed electorate.  And the more time I spend on social media platforms, the more concerned I get about our definition of “informed”.

Neil Postman said we were the “best entertained, least-informed society on earth”.  He wrote this in 1985, before cable news, before Twitter, before Facebook.

And with more people than ever getting their news from Facebook and Twitter,  the role of media literacy and critical consumption of this material could not be more important.

5 Simple Steps to a Healthy Family Media Diet

5 Simple Steps to a Healthy Family Media Diet | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Many parents struggle with exactly how much screen time is OK for their kids. Is a half-hour show OK but a full-length movie "bad"? How much gaming should you allow when your kid also uses his computer for homework? Does Wikipedia count as "reading"? And when does a passion for say, video games, become problematic? The truth is, there is no magic formula. And just as every family differs in what they eat, when they eat, and what they like, a healthy media diet is different for every family. The key is making sure that the things that are important to your family are fairly balanced over the long term."

Children trust ‘smart’ characters on television

Children trust ‘smart’ characters on television | Educommunication | Scoop.it
Children are more likely to learn from educational television programming if two things occur: 1) If the children believe the character on the program is knowledgeable, and 2) they are reminded to think about what they have seen on television for ideas of how to solve a problem. This is according to a new study by a group of researchers, including Rebekah Richert, psychology professor at the University of California, Riverside. The study is called, “U.S. Preschoolers’ Trust of and Learning from Media Characters,” and it was published in the Journal of Children and Media.

Use Political Covers to Teach Media Literacy

Use Political Covers to Teach Media Literacy | Educommunication | Scoop.it
When a presidential candidate appears on a magazine cover, it may be the culmination of months of negotiation between the news magazine and the candidate. Candidates don’t have final control over how they will be portrayed on the cover. In fact, some cover images may not be complimentary to a candidate. But asking students to conduct a “close reading” of any one of the dozens of the current event or pop culture magazine covers is a worthwhile visual and media literacy exercise.

"Half of of all teens say they feel addicted to their mobile devices. That’s right, 50 percent of teens actually admitted that they feel addicted. Just imagine what the real number is. Not only do teens feel they can’t put their devices down, but their parents know it (59 percent) and many parents themselves can’t put their own devices down (27 percent)."

News Literacy Training

News Literacy Training | Educommunication | Scoop.it
“News media literacy” isn’t just about being able to read and understand the news; the term also refers to the ability to analyze the news for reliability and accuracy and distinguish between fact, opinions and assertions. This task — for the journalist and the citizen in a democratic society — grows increasingly difficult in the digital age as the number of news generators proliferates and the process of creating content becomes less uniform.

In loud rooms our brains 'hear' in a different way – new findings

In loud rooms our brains 'hear' in a different way – new findings | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"When we talk face-to-face, we exchange many more signals than just words. We communicate using our body posture, facial expressions and head and eye movements; but also through the rhythms that are produced when someone is speaking. A good example is the rate at which we produce syllables in continuous speech – about three to seven times a second. In a conversation, a listener tunes in to this rhythm and uses it to predict the timing of the syllables that the speaker will use next. This makes it easier for them to follow what is being said. Many other things are also going on. Using brain-imaging techniques we know for instance that even when no one is talking, the part of our brain responsible for hearing produces rhythmic activity at a similar rate to the syllables in speech. When we listen to someone talking, these brain rhythms align to the syllable structure. As a result, the brain rhythms match and track in frequency and time the incoming acoustic speech signal."

» By Any Media Necessary: The New Activism of American Youth

» By Any Media Necessary: The New Activism of American Youth | Educommunication | Scoop.it
There is a widespread perception that the foundations of American democracy are dysfunctional, public trust in core institutions is eroding, and little is likely to emerge from traditional politics that will shift those conditions. Youth are often seen as emblematic of this crisis — frequently represented as uninterested in political life, ill-informed about current-affairs, and unwilling to register and vote.

By Any Media Necessary offers a profoundly different picture of contemporary American youth. Young men and women are tapping into the potential of new forms of communication such as social media platforms, spreadable videos and memes, remixing the language of popular culture, and seeking to bring about political change — by any media necessary. In a series of case studies covering a diverse range of organizations, networks, and movements involving young people in the political process — from the Harry Potter Alliance which fights for human rights in the name of the popular fantasy franchise to immigration rights advocates using superheroes to dramatize their struggles — By Any Media Necessary examines the civic imagination at work.

Eduteka - La falacia del nativo digital | Educommunication | Scoop.it
