Net neutrality: 'father of internet' joins tech leaders in condemning repeal plan | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"More than 20 internet pioneers and leaders including the “father of the internet”, Vint Cerf; the inventor of the world wide web, Tim Berners-Lee; and the Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have urged the FCC to cancel its vote to repeal net neutrality, describing the plan as “based on a flawed and factually inaccurate” understanding of how the internet works."

Young Children’s Digital Literacy Practices in the Home

Young Children’s Digital Literacy Practices in the Home | Educommunication | Scoop.it
"This paper reports a review of research literature on young children’s (aged 0-8 years old) digital literacy practices in the home. The review contributes to one of the aims of the COST DigiLitEY programme by identifying the current state of knowledge on young children’s digital literacy and multimodal practices in homes and communities, including synthesising research on parental support of children’s digital literacy development” (WG1 Mission Statement). Accordingly, the purpose of this review is to 1) summarise current research knowledge in the area of young children’s digital literacy practices in the home, 2) identify key messages for educational researchers, parents and policy makers, and 3) propose key research questions in the field for future study. A total of 33 studies published between 2005 and 2015 were selected for the review."
Manuel Pinto's insight:
We need this kind of reviewing of literature very  much.

Why These Friendly Robots Can’t be Good Friends to Our Kids

Why These Friendly Robots Can’t be Good Friends to Our Kids | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Jibo the robot swivels around when it hears its name and tilts its touchscreen face upward, expectantly. “I am a robot, but I am not just a machine,” it says. “I have a heart. Well, not a real heart. But feelings. Well, not human feelings. You know what I mean.” Actually, I’m not sure we do. And that’s what unsettles me about the wave of “sociable robots” that are coming online. The new releases include Jibo, Cozmo, Kuri and Meccano M.A.X. Although they bear some resemblance to assistants such as Apple’s Siri, Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa (Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos also owns The Washington Post), these robots come with an added dose of personality. They are designed to win us over not with their smarts but with their sociability. They are marketed as companions. And they do more than engage us in conversation — they feign emotion and empathy."

Media Literacy and Fake News

Media Literacy and Fake News | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"Part of my charter as the tech teacher is to facilitate learning about digital citizenship and online research. In the past I’ve used lessons from Common Sense Media and really enjoyed them. I especially love their lessons on copyright / fair use and maintaining your digital footprint. I’ve had a few conversations with kids lately, including my own daughters, that have given me a sense of urgency when it comes to media literacy. Students love to show me funny things they encounter online and exciting or outrageous stories. Sometimes they’re real but exaggerated. Sometimes they’re total hoaxes. One event that really made me feel a sense of urgency was when President Trump re-tweeted some clickbait videos with inflammatory titles against Muslims. "

Making the internet a safer (and better) place for children

Making the internet a safer (and better) place for children | Educommunication | Scoop.it

The internet has quickly become a necessity rather than a luxury in children’s lives. Parents, educators and governments are struggling to keep up with the risks and opportunities it brings. Sonia Livingstone takes a critical look at the plans for an Internet Safety Strategy. She argues that digital literacy needs to be taught in a way that extends far beyond the concept of ‘e-safety’ and limiting screen time. Websites and apps should normally be designed with children in mind. Children and adults alike need a single point of contact for complaints and concerns – not just an ombudsman for under-18s.""

A participação das crianças no jornalismo infantojuvenil português e brasileiro

A participação das crianças no jornalismo infantojuvenil português e brasileiro | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Bias, Bullshit and Lies: Audience Perspectives on Low Trust in the Media

Bias, Bullshit and Lies: Audience Perspectives on Low Trust in the Media | Educommunication | Scoop.it
"Even in a world where people increasingly get news from social media, the professional news media is still seen as largely to blame for low trust according to a new report from the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, which examines the underlying reasons for trust and distrust in the news media (and in social media) across nine countries. Bias, spin and hidden agendas come across as the main reasons for lack of trust in the news media along with a perceived decline in journalistic standards driven by greater competition and some online business models. These concerns are strongest with the young and with those on low incomes. Trust in the news that people find in social media is lower still, but similar trends are at play - bias, agendas and low quality information. The report argues that this is largely a function of a model that allows anybody to publish without checks, and algorithms that sometimes favour extreme or contentious content. The study is based on analysing thousands of open-ended responses from the 2017 Reuters Institute Digital News Report, where respondents were asked to give their reasons for low trust in their own words, using open-ended text fields."

Conspiracy thinking less likely with greater news media literacy

"The more one knows about the news media and how it works, the less likely one is to believe conspiracy theories, researchers at the University of Illinois (UI) concluded. UI researchers surveyed nearly 400 participants online in spring 2016 to gauge how their news media literacy, measured as a combination of news media knowledge and psychological traits connected with processing news messages, might relate to their endorsement of conspiracy theories. The researchers found that individuals who give credence to conspiracy theories know comparatively little about how the news media work. They also found that the greater one' s knowledge about the news media, from the kinds of news covered to the commercial context in which news is produced and to the effects on public opinion news can have, the less likely one will fall prey to conspiracy theories."
