Myths of Technology Series: "Technology Will Replace Face-to-Face Interaction"

Myths of Technology Series: "Technology Will Replace Face-to-Face Interaction" | Educommunication | Scoop.it

We have to see that for some students, technology actually can provide them the voice that they have never had before.  I spoke to one student that said the use of social media actually inspired them to start speaking publicly because they developed confidence through a medium that worked for them.  I think of how many students would benefit and feel more comfortable talking in public when they would be allowed to use a medium that works for them first.

Mapping Media Literacy Practices and Actions in EU28

Mapping Media Literacy Practices and Actions in EU28 | Educommunication | Scoop.it
"So what is Europe doing to encourage our media literacy? What measures are being taken at national and European levels to improve our critical appreciation and understanding of the mass media? The European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, has just published a brand new study - Mapping of media literary practices and actions in EU - 28 - free to download by clicking on the button above. This study has been financed by the European Commission with the goal of analysing the various media literacy initiatives on a national or regional level in order to provide an overview of what is currently being undertaken. This is the first major mapping exercise to survey the field in Europe."

The Evolution of the Internet, From Decentralized to Centralized

"The Internet is our digital information superhighway which we use so ubiquitously today. The term “online” has become synonymous with the Internet. We are actually almost always online and sometimes we are not aware of it. This is because of the transparency in service that Internet Service Providers (ISP) and cellular phone providers have given us. Our Internet plan and smartphone service provide data access to the Internet 24/7/365. We don’t just use the Internet for online shopping and general research. We also use the Internet to pay bills, RSVP to invitations, post photos from our daily life and even order groceries. It has become a necessity for modern living that it seems we cannot live without it. If the Internet were to suddenly shut down, it will cause anxiety among people whose lives have become very much dependent on it. Bloggers and vloggers, social media influencers and online gamers form a large percentage of the online community. This goes to show how the Internet has now become a big part of daily life. This is due to commercialization and how all aspects of modern life revolve around it. That is what has lead to the centralization of the Internet. This centralization is now controlled by the big players who provide it as a service, yet the original Internet was not like this."

How trust in Wikipedia evolves: a survey of students aged 11 to 25

How trust in Wikipedia evolves: a survey of students aged 11 to 25 | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"The trust readers put in Wikipedia has been widely studied (Okoli, Mehdi, Mesgari, Nielsen and Lanamäki, 2014). A specific focus has been given to the analysis of attitudes amongst young people. This focus is justified because of the importance assumed by the collaborative encyclopaedia in youth information-seeking practices (Flanagin and Metzger, 2010; Judd and Kennedy, 2010; Knight and Pryke, 2012) and because of the numerous questions posed on the reliability of Wikipedia. Young people are also usually considered to be less equipped than adults to deal with information credibility problems because of their lower cognitive development and limited life experience (Eastin, 2008; Flanagin and Metzger, 2008). Wikipedia is a source of information used by the vast majority of young people. However, the issue of changes in perceptions of Wikipedia according to age has received little attention, in the same way as the issue of credibility judgments. The importance of the age factor in the development of such judgments is based on a theoretical point of view (Eastin, 2008), but lacks empirical support. The aim of our study is to address these issues. We describe and compare trust in Wikipedia for different age groups. To this end, we submitted the same questionnaire (on attitudes towards this source) to young people in France: 1) in secondary education (eleven to eighteen years old) and 2) in higher education (nineteen to twenty-five years old)."

Opinião | O triunfo dos ecrãs

Opinião | O triunfo dos ecrãs | Educommunication | Scoop.it
CENA 1.

Can a New Approach to Information Literacy Reduce Digital Polarization?

Can a New Approach to Information Literacy Reduce Digital Polarization? | Educommunication | Scoop.it

"The internet doesn’t come with an instruction manual, but it should—to give users the skills to separate truth from falsehood so they can distinguish between propaganda and the indisputable and confirmable. And colleges should be the place leading students through this reference book. That’s the argument of Michael Caulfield, director of blended and networked learning at Washington State University Vancouver, and it isn’t just some “hot take” designed to be provocative. He actually wrote the manual. And he has already convinced more than a dozen colleges to adopt it (and more than 100 college libraries to prominently link to it). Recently, he’s started research in an effort to prove that it works (and can help preserve American democracy)."

James Harding's Hugh Cudlipp lecture: the damage technology is doing to democracy

James Harding's Hugh Cudlipp lecture: the damage technology is doing to democracy | Educommunication | Scoop.it

Full text of speech by former director of BBC news

"TV promised a new age of accountability. It brought the world into our homes. But it’s also delivered more than was originally advertised. Polarisation, the soundbite, negative advertising, the 24-hour news cycle, the industrialisation of spin and personality driven politics have all accelerated with the television age. Indeed, it was TV that gave us The Apprentice – the Making of This President. Much like television, the internet promised to empower the individual and enhance the democratic process. But it’s also distorting it. The new media is remaking our politics in ways we didn’t expect, nor fully understand. Technology is disrupting democracy. Whether it destroys it is up to us."
