Home-schooling numbers and opportunities grow

Home-schooling numbers and opportunities grow | Education | Scoop.it
After searching through private school options, which were either too expensive or too far away, the Lancasters decided the best choice for their daughter was to bring her home. Though many in the home-school movement started teaching their own children for religious purposes, parents now cite a wide range of reasons for keeping students at home, from security concerns to trying to give children an academic edge. School -- public, private, whatever -- any atmosphere that is ritualized, Monday through Friday program for kids, they go in and they're told to sit at a desk for six or seven hours a day with 30 minutes for lunch and 30 minutes for recess. [...] they're told not to speak, not to answer, not to interrupt. [...] as with any big, life-changing decision, the beginning of the Lancasters' home-schooling journey began with some serious challenges, the most daunting of which was placed on Janet's shoulders when she attempted to find the perfect curriculum for her daughter. In addition to the regular class meetings, Lancaster's daughter joins other local hom-eschooled children for field trips twice a month, heading off to museums and ice-skating outings, among other things. There are basketball teams, Shakespeare, rocket clubs, everything, Lancaster said, adding that the first year of home-schooling she enrolled her daughter in so many activities that the first-grader said, Mommy, this is too much. Overall, the last five years have been positive, said Lancaster who is favorite part of the process is the look in her daughter's eyes when she gets excited about learning. The school environment, with drugs, safety issues and peer pressure, was the most important reason that 25 percent of parents home-schooled, according to the 2011-12 National Household Education Survey. The report found about the same number of males and females were home-schooled, and the overwhelming majority of students were white, 68 percent, with Hispanics a distant second at 15 percent. "To a large degree, the concept of admitting home-school students has become normalized in college admissions," said David Hawkins, director of public policy and research for the National Association of College Admissions Counseling. Home-schooling has clearly not hurt the development or academic opportunities for students like the Speeds's son and daughter.
