How To Talk to Teens About Cannabis

How To Talk to Teens About Cannabis | Educators For Sensible Drug Policy (NZ) | Scoop.it
Be honest — and make sure you know what you’re talking about — when you’re talking with children about cannabis use....
MildGreen Initiative's insight:
Education, on all drugs but in particular Cannabis must be in context. Take it out of the 'health and physical education' area and put it back where it should be, in context of where it is encountered, discussed and is kept age/maturity relevant. (Re)empower parents and primary caregivers. One thing for sure, we need to knock off the endless realTV cop shows that link cannabis to drug addiction. There is the societal lie maximising all drug risks.

Finding a Balance: Schools Aim to Educate, Enforce as Pot Becomes Legal | Educators For Sensible Drug Policy (NZ) | Scoop.it
Santa Maria Police D.A.R.E. officer Mike Wheeler talks to students before a D.A.R.E. graduation in December at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge. Wheeler believes the number of cannabis-related calls, especially among minors, will increase with recreational sale commencing January 1. Under California’s new laws and regulations, possession or consumption of cannabis remains a prohibited, punishable offense for individuals under 21 years of age. Juveniles caught in possession or under the influence of cannabis face mandatory drug education classes and community service hours, while underage adults can see fines of up to $500 and six-month jail sentences. With recreational sale commencing Jan. 1 and cannabis poised to become commonplace in California, Mike Wheeler, D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) officer with the Santa Maria Police Department, believes the number of cannabis-related calls — especially among minors — will increase. "The [number] of times [...]

A lesson in why those responsible for maintaining the mess should have as little as possible with determining the future.

DARE has no place in Schools.  A Man with a badge entitling him to put your Parents in Jail lacks education and training 'as a teacher' and thus should keep well away from our children, he is without moral authority.

Massachusetts Group Creates Comprehensive Program to Educate Doctors on Medical Marijuana

Massachusetts Group Creates Comprehensive Program to Educate Doctors on Medical Marijuana | Educators For Sensible Drug Policy (NZ) | Scoop.it

A state legalizing medical marijuana does not mean that doctors and others in the healthcare industry are 100 percent knowledgeable about cannabis. In fact, many states fail to put proper requirements or education in place for medical personnel to understand when the drug would or would not be effective at treating a patient's condition. But a new program in Massachusetts is looking to fix that.

How Colleges Are Preparing Students for a Country Where Pot Is Legal

How Colleges Are Preparing Students for a Country Where Pot Is Legal | Educators For Sensible Drug Policy (NZ) | Scoop.it
Students and professors across the country are exploring the complex economic, sociological, and legal questions raised by legalizing cannabis.  (Interesting. A college-level course on marijuana.
MildGreen Initiative's insight:

With colonisation driven by drug policy and post WWI politics defined by social policy of control (prohibitions) as a driver of crime and prejudice modern history is inseparable from the context of what  drugs people do and how it influences culture. It should be taught that way.... Anything else is just puerile dishonesty.

As marijuana legalization gains popularity, more people are also realizing that many of the stigmas about cannabis[/articles/cannabis-at-work-the-stigma/] are not true. And it appears that's true among young people as well.
MildGreen Initiative's insight:
Without a doubt, the first thing one would want to do if you wanted to fuck up drug policy, is lie to the very people one is pretending to protect.

Cannabis: no hangover, no violence, no carbs. Now convince young people there is utility in prohibition.

This Is Your Brain on Drugs

This Is Your Brain on Drugs | Educators For Sensible Drug Policy (NZ) | Scoop.it
New studies show that the effects of marijuana on young people may be greater than we thought.
MildGreen Initiative's insight:

A tired rehash (oops for pun) of 'maybe's from the same old research paradigm, lets suppose this indicates real risk! without looking at the underlying set and setting of prohibition. The more dangerous a drug may be (or become) the less rational it is to hand its quality control and distribution to illicit channels.

Since the evolutionary step to medical cannabis and a more pragmatic legal regulation in several states, Volkow et al fail to account for the benefits... lower early entry to experiential use.
