After 100 years of the same teaching model It’s time to throw out the playbook

After 100 years of the same teaching model It’s time to throw out the playbook | Educational tools and ICT | Scoop.it

It’s time to change the direction of the arrow by for once and for all turning it around and allowing it to originate from the student. Imagine a classroom where students are the ones driving the learning and are empowered to pursue things that matter to them. In the infographic above we see multiple modalities being employed by these students as students are accessing human and digital resources to drive their own learning. In a 21st century learning model, learning extends beyond the classroom walls, and students are exchanging, discussing, questioning, reflecting and making connections anywhere, anytime. Most importantly, students are inspired and empowered to act, rather than sit back and have the knowledge brought to them.

The one crucial skill our education system is missing | #Empathy #EmotionalIntelligence

The one crucial skill our education system is missing | #Empathy #EmotionalIntelligence | Educational tools and ICT | Scoop.it

From Blade Runner to I, Robot, the big screens of Hollywood have predicted the rise of the machine. Automated intelligences will wait our tables and drive our cabs. They will serve us by performing menial tasks. But fact is now surpassing fiction. Automation has moved beyond the factory assembly line as computers are diagnosing illnesses, providing legal counsel, and make financial and political decisions. And if artificial intelligence really is faster, smarter and more reliable, what are we left with?

The answer is precisely that element which makes us less efficient and slower. Our humanity. But rather than being seen as a weakness, this is actually our strongest suit. It’s one we need to empower, because studies show that as the world becomes increasingly automated, computerised and digitalised, we are losing the very skills that define us as human. Just when we need them the most.

Our empathy is something that computers will always struggle to emulate. We need to celebrate what makes us different from even the smartest of the machines. While the future belongs to those who are able to navigate this increasingly digitalised world of ours, the choicest spoils will fall to those who can combine technological fluency with emotional intelligence.

Finally I can see this topic emerge in public discussion about education - something I've been privately preaching about.

Felipe Rincon's curator insight, March 14, 8:22 PM
It is very interesting the way in which this article emphasizes the importance of empathy and the other characteristics belonging to the human being in our society, also how that characteristics distance us from machines. I think that the implementation of methodologies that take into consideration this aspects in education in general will contribute to the comprehensive citizens education. The appropriate combination of technological fluency with emotional intelligence should be one of the goals in modern education
Patrice McDonough's curator insight, March 15, 11:49 AM
Who knew our humanity would be buried under the weight of automated intelligences.  Overtaking #EmotionalIntelligence!!

Narissa Lambert's curator insight, May 30, 4:16 AM
Awesome tool for creating 3D digital images and it's free! This is a great way students can digitally represent their creations online. For an assessment piece, students can create their own recipe book in the form of a blog throughout the term. When they upload images of their food creations they can use this tool to turn them from 2D to 3D then insert them into their posts. What a cool and clear way for the audience to see the intended end product, then they can leave comments on how their own turned out in comparison.

Tanya Krause's curator insight, May 30, 5:08 AM
Wow... this is awesome. I am also imaging this in a Food Tech class in the near future. Instead of producing the product, students create 3D images from their 2D designs.

When the Internet Delivers Its Own Content, What’s Left for the Teacher?

When the Internet Delivers Its Own Content, What’s Left for the Teacher? | Educational tools and ICT | Scoop.it
I’ve started recognizing a common thread to the latest trends in teaching. Flipped learning, blending learning, student-centered learning, project-based learning, and even self-organized learning—they all marginalize the teacher’s expertise. Or, to put it more euphemistically, they all transform the teacher into a more facilitative role.

RossanaPiccini's comment, April 3, 2015 10:01 AM
This is not just sad news for us teachers, it is a dangerous belief in the power a few powerful people to control education at large. I find this worrying.
Robin Yu's curator insight, April 5, 2015 1:06 PM

The companies that are taking over teachers' roles.

Ivon Prefontaine, PhD's curator insight, April 21, 2015 9:44 PM

There are two things that stood out for me in this article. First, Derrida's concept of deconstruction is a critical deconstructing of what we think is reality. His writing about teaching would not have eliminated the teacher and replaced the teacher with a burger flipper. The teacher's role would certainly transform and move beyond what we understand it to be, but it would be reconstructed to be further deconstructed.

The second point is that teaching is about leading and relating to students. That does not mean we do without teachers. It means that teachers are finding their way along the path.

Cloud Education, what does it mean for teachers and pupils?  Will this be the future?

CHRISTINE OWEN's curator insight, May 22, 2015 9:29 PM

New technology must be accompanied by new pedagogies for new learning to take place. We are really only guessing at what the future holds for our students. In previous and even recent ages, we had a pattern of development to base our predictions upon. Now,the impossible is very likely, and the possible will be something else entirely tomorrow. We must ensure our students have the capacity to be adaptable and creative in their thinking to take advantage of and flourish in our world of ever improving technology and access.

Seymour Papert on How Computers Fundamentally Change the Way Kids Learn | Educational tools and ICT | Scoop.it
With new technologies the kid is able to explore much more knowledge by direct exploration, whether it’s information or exploration by getting into his sources, or finding other people to talk about it. I think we’re just beginning to see, and we’ll see a lot more non-textual information available through something like the Web or whatever it develops into. So there will be much more opportunity to learn before running into this barrier of the limitations of the immediate.

Η αλήθεια μας μέσα από τα Μέσα Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης

Η αλήθεια μας μέσα από τα Μέσα Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης | Educational tools and ICT | Scoop.it
