For Students to Succeed, Social Capital Matter Just as Much as Skills—Here’s Why  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Let’s just debunk a big ol’ myth right now: No one, and I repeat, no onemakes it entirely based on their own merit. The concept of “meritocracy” as a path to success is misguided, because so many external factors shape the privileges, opportunities and challenges that people experience in life."

Getting Students to Use Technology Purposefully

Getting Students to Use Technology Purposefully | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"The recent data is startling: a quarter of teens say that they are online almost constantly, and teens spend about nine hours per day online. There are legitimate concerns that too much screen time will damage children’s brains. There are also concerns about bullying, security, and other ills associated with social media. So there is a great need to get students to use technology purposefully."

Juan Diego Ruiz's curator insight, January 14, 10:17 PM
Technology has evolved a lot the last decades, nowadays we have three main categories where the use of internet relies on, creation, consumption and learning. Many of our students are more familiarized with consumption due to the social media and apps that entertain them. The idea is that adults and teachers can guide students for using techonology more purposefully, taking into account that many clicks they do on internet are giving some people money, why? for making them aware what is really useful and what is not. The idea is to focus on creation of content, or even learning about any topic of interest. Also, we are called to teach them face-to-face activities for making them discover their own passions.

How Can Online Instructors Get Students to Talk to Each Other?

How Can Online Instructors Get Students to Talk to Each Other?  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Cultivating an engaging environment can be a challenge when teaching online. Having the interaction occur among students, instead of solely with the professor, can be even more difficult."

Juan Diego Ruiz's curator insight, January 14, 10:27 PM
Online Education has pros and cons, one of its cons is that there is no social interaction when doing homeworks, studying or learning a topic, what it is recommended for increasing the levels of communication students have each other, is to use pages such as tricider where students can gather ideas, argue their positions or even add topics or discussions, this makes students' online interaction more  enjoyable, enriching and  purposeful.
