Using Digital Tools to Teach Soft Skills | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"When thinking about the requirements of a solid education, most people focus on the standard subjects such as reading and writing. But employers are increasingly asking for new hires who are proficient in soft skills. While there is no one universally accepted definition of “soft skills,” the basic idea is simple: soft skills are all of the non-academic skills that one needs to be successful on the job."

Mobile learning – Push or pull?

Mobile learning – Push or pull? | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
The universal advice for m-learning is to keep it short. The argument is that workers these days are busy professionals with the attention span of a juvenile gnat, so anything longer than a few minutes won't be effective. I don't buy it, but I am in the minority. Nonetheless, I recognise the benefits of this…

Research-informed ways of using #edtech to help learners revise effectively

Research-informed ways of using #edtech to help learners revise effectively  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"I’ve long shared that effective use of technology to support learning doesn’t mean using flashy tools. Using fantastic tools that can create amazing things can lead to lots of engagement, but as we all know, this is a poor proxy for learning. It is far better to use a simple tool that allows a learner to focus on the content that *might* produce a beautiful outcome rather than one where the learner has to spend lots of time working on the technology to make a quality outcome. The learning content should be the focus. Using technology as a gimmick devalues us as teachers and the technology we are trying to utilise."

Tech may be just what the doctor ordered for teacher sick days

Tech may be just what the doctor ordered for teacher sick days | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"The influx of classroom technology could soon make it so that entire days of learning aren't thrown away when a teacher is absent. Often, a teacher being sick means a bump in the road for learning progress being made at that time, as substitute teachers are often called in that morning, don't necessarily know the students, and may not have a clear picture of what students are (or should be) working on."

How to Develop a MOOC Platform in 2018 | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
Quick thought: back in 2011, Coursera, Udacity and edX didn’t exist. In 2017, Coursera alone can brag about 30 million learners, 2,700+ active courses, 237 specializations, and 161 partners. Udacity yearly revenue is at 70 million dollars. edX is a non-profit platform but it is also doing quite well. All these platforms seem like a decent option for college education replacement.

Mistakes to Avoid When Using Photos in eLearning | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it
As an eLearning designer, you’ve likely used photos in eLearning. Photos are a great way to reinforce your message or convey an emotion. Photos can help tell a story and engage your learners. Although photos have the power to enhance your message or story, they can also become a big distraction
EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

One of my pet peeves is the mixing of clip art graphics with photos on the same page or slide. Pick one format and use it consistently throughout the document.

Where Learning Analytics Go Wrong

Where Learning Analytics Go Wrong | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Imagine keeping track of each student’s digital footprint, class attendance, and individual needs. Essentially, this is what learning analytics does. Learning analytics is defined as the measurement and dissection of data about learners used to optimize their learning experience. Learning analytics makes learning personal and tailored. With learning analytics, educators can assess where learning gaps occurred. In universities, learning analytics is being used to predict student success or identify students who are “at risk.” While there is much excitement about learning analytics and the ways it can shape the classroom and transform education, it is not without flaws."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

This concern was the inspiration for our new edited book titled, "Responsible Analytics and Data Mining in Education: Global Perspectives on Quality, Support, and Decision-Making" https://amzn.to/2OBOmd8

Ten things every educator should be able to do with their iPad

Ten things every educator should be able to do with their iPad  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"When I reflect back to early versions of iOS and the workarounds that teachers and students used to have to jump through hoops to complete through third-party applications, the iOS operating system has come a very long way from where it used to be. No longer do you have to mirror your iPad to record your screen. No longer do you have to go through lengthy processes or use additional hardware to do things like split screen or drag and drop. In this post, I’ll share ten of what I think are the most important things educators should think about in order to make the most of their iPad..."
