Where Learning Analytics Go Wrong

Where Learning Analytics Go Wrong | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"Imagine keeping track of each student’s digital footprint, class attendance, and individual needs. Essentially, this is what learning analytics does. Learning analytics is defined as the measurement and dissection of data about learners used to optimize their learning experience. Learning analytics makes learning personal and tailored. With learning analytics, educators can assess where learning gaps occurred. In universities, learning analytics is being used to predict student success or identify students who are “at risk.” While there is much excitement about learning analytics and the ways it can shape the classroom and transform education, it is not without flaws."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

This concern was the inspiration for our new edited book titled, "Responsible Analytics and Data Mining in Education: Global Perspectives on Quality, Support, and Decision-Making" https://amzn.to/2OBOmd8

Research-informed ways of using #edtech to help learners revise effectively

Research-informed ways of using #edtech to help learners revise effectively  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"I’ve long shared that effective use of technology to support learning doesn’t mean using flashy tools. Using fantastic tools that can create amazing things can lead to lots of engagement, but as we all know, this is a poor proxy for learning. It is far better to use a simple tool that allows a learner to focus on the content that *might* produce a beautiful outcome rather than one where the learner has to spend lots of time working on the technology to make a quality outcome. The learning content should be the focus. Using technology as a gimmick devalues us as teachers and the technology we are trying to utilise."
