Report: Instructional Design Support Helps Increase Student-to-Student Interaction in Online Courses

When instructional designers are involved in online course design, student-to-student interaction goes up, according to a new survey of online education leaders from Quality Matters and Eduventures Research. The survey compared reported student interaction levels at institutions where instructional design support is required for online course development vs. those where such support is absent or optional. How to boost your productivity by leveraging momentum

"Momentum: that unstoppable feeling when motion just takes care of itself. Having momentum feels good. Those days when you feel propelled by an invisible force and everything falls into place can seem like a coincidence when that happens. But it’s not. Momentum is the sum of a series of events in the days, weeks and months preceding it. In other words: you were the one that created it."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

Computers may be good at multitasking. Humans are not. Leverage momentum by focusing on one task at a time.

An (Apple) Education – The reality distortion field meets a market it can’t penetrate

"I love the iPad. However much you think you love the iPad, I probably love it more than you do. I use it for ~90% of my computing needs these days (and the other ~10% is about work-related auth issues — with a slight nod to the preference to editing my writing on the “desktop web” as well — though I mainly write on the iPad). The iPad might be my favorite computer, period.

But. I think Apple is throwing away an opportunity here with the iPad in schools."

What Adult Learners Really Need (Hint: It's Not Just Job Skills)

What Adult Learners Really Need (Hint: It's Not Just Job Skills)  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"...job security and economic success are key goals of college for nearly all students, young and old. But students also see college as a journey of personal growth, a way of laying claim to their lives.

For most nontraditional students, this dimension of "self-authoring" (in the words of psychologist Marcia Baxter Magolda) is not less crucial, but even more. They often feel that they have failed in some way the customary narrative of high-school-to-college that defines successful adulthood."

Why Designing for Disability Leads to Better Solutions for Everyone

Why Designing for Disability Leads to Better Solutions for Everyone  | Educational Technology News | Scoop.it

"In her TEDx talk, Elise Roy describes how losing her hearing when she was a child forced her to become an excellent problem solver because she was able to identify issues someone else might not have ever noticed. Growing up, she had to design innovative solutions to challenges that arose in her everyday life, picked herself up from failure, tried new strategies and eventually succeeded. She sees her disability as a tremendous strength now that she's a designer. She experiences the world differently from other people, and that unique perspective allows her to design innovative solutions."

EDTECH@UTRGV's insight:

On many campuses, online courses are required to undergo rigorous reviews to ensure they are 100% ADA compliant before they can be deployed. It wouldn't hurt if face-to-face courses underwent similar reviews.
