iPads or any kind of tablet for that matter.

Justin Henriks's curator insight, April 26, 2015 7:36 PM

Some really good thoughts! We certainly do need to change the way we use software/apps and allow students to have greater power in deciding which apps to use and how they use them. As teachers, we are not always the expert on how to use apps!

Lesson Study? There’s an App for That

Lesson Study? There’s an App for That | 1:1 Tablet Initiative- All You Need to Know | Scoop.it
Lesson study is a technique used to improve teaching by observing the students. An app helps teachers do lesson study so they can improve how they teach.
Denise Gallegos's insight:
Lesson study sounds like a futuristic idea. I am very excited to start using this method to get better. I think that I can start by using it with student teachers because they usually just receive a written evaluation. Being able to keep track of time that teachers and students talk is amazing. Another thing that I really liked about using this application is that you can actually take pictures and save them to analyze later. This is surely a game changer.

Learn how the iPad App Puppet Pals is being implemented in elementary schools to create AMAZING projects.
Denise Gallegos's insight:
I love Puppet Pals but I have never used this version. I love the fact that students can create their own characters by drawing them on paper first and then transfer them to a digital format. There was one very important tip that I have to agree with. Students need to have a script before to make sure there is not so much time wasted. I'll be working with second graders next year and I can't wait to start using this version of Puppet Pals.

Innovation in Practice: Transforming Classroom Culture in a 1-to-1 Model

Innovation in Practice: Transforming Classroom Culture in a 1-to-1 Model | 1:1 Tablet Initiative- All You Need to Know | Scoop.it
In a 1-to-1 classroom, innovation happens when educators focus on fostering a culture of creativity, curiosity, and individualized learning.
Denise Gallegos's insight:
The scenario described in this iPad classroom is exactly how 1:1 classrooms should feel. I really like the idea of soft places in the classroom where students feel like they are at home. I also like the fact that in these types of classrooms you don't really know where the front of the classroom is because the teacher is not in the front of the stage at all times. This feels somewhat the way my classroom is at times. I really would like to work more on the soft areas of the classroom for the following year though. This was a very interesting article for teachers interested in starting or improving their 1:1 classrooms.

Denise Gallegos's insight:
I also believe that motivating teachers to change their practices  is a top challenge. We already know that technology comes easy to our students and that they can get motivated to learn with it. I only think that teachers need to be more interested in integrating technology in order to make a real change. It takes time but it's an effort that needs to be done now.

Invisible Classroom Transitions with GoNoodle by @SamPatue · TeacherCast Educational Broadcasting NetworkbySam Patterson | 1:1 Tablet Initiative- All You Need to Know | Scoop.it
The classroom is and should be a celebration of voices. I need to stop wasting time in class waiting for silence, which I want at times but do not truly value it in the classroom.
Denise Gallegos's insight:
This is an eye opener for me. I knew that time is wasted during transition times but I was not aware of how much time was wasted. GoNoodle is a great application that helps students to get focused. I have used this application for my third graders and they really love it. Once they see Maximo, the monkey with tips for relaxation, they stop what they are doing and automatically start the exercises. It's amazing how the students respond to this. I am definitely using this application starting again next year.

How Digital Games Help Teachers Make Connections to Lessons and Students

How Digital Games Help Teachers Make Connections to Lessons and Students | 1:1 Tablet Initiative- All You Need to Know | Scoop.it
Teachers finding the most success are good at creatively connecting the game back to the curriculum, while allowing it to maintain the qualities of a good game.
Denise Gallegos's insight:
I have a 16 year old nephew who has played civilization games since he was about 9 years old. I have heard him talk about Rome and sometimes he surprises me with so many facts about the Roman civilization. He always tells me that he learned those facts by playing video games. I think this is a great way to get students motivated to learn because kids are so immersed in the game that they forget they are actually learning. History might seem boring to some students when they have to read so many facts that might not make sense to them. Games are a great way to change this view of a history lesson.
