New Update: Help for Teachers Going From an iPad to a Chromebook

New Update: Help for Teachers Going From an iPad to a Chromebook | education technology | Scoop.it
I am a huge fan of iPads AND Chromebooks. I think both can be integrated purposefully into the classroom in ways that are very powerful to the learning experience. Both devices can accomplish almost any form of masterful technology integration, boost critical thinking, and help to make student thinking visible. As many classrooms and teachers move between the two devices, they often struggle to find similar applications – to supplement the one they came to love on the opposite machine.

To help those teachers moving from an iPad to Chromebook, here are a few ways you can use the Chromebook to do some of the great things you’ve grown to love on an iPad.

How Teachers Can Change the Future of Educational Technology - InformED

How Teachers Can Change the Future of Educational Technology - InformED | education technology | Scoop.it
One challenge facing educational start-ups is that many technologists don’t have real world teaching experience or have been out of the school system for so long that they’re out of touch with the classroom experience. And teachers who may have dynamic ideas for software or apps in education don’t have the technical know-how, access to investment, or experience starting a company from scratch.

ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship!

ISTE | It's time to commit to digital citizenship! | education technology | Scoop.it

“Learning to be an effective digital citizen is not something that happens if we don’t actively teach it,” Culatta says. “And preparing a generation of effective digital citizens is the most important thing we can do to ensure our democracy for the future.”

Unfortunately, many educators still mistakenly conflate digital citizenship with online safety. While teaching kids to craft strong passwords and refrain from posting inappropriate pictures online is important, it’s no longer enough. In an era of fake news and increasingly bitter political polarization, it’s time for teachers to move beyond online safety and teach students how to use technology to:

* Make their communities better.
* Respectfully engage with people who have different beliefs.
* Shape and change public policy.
*Assess the validity of online sources of information.

“Digital citizenship, it turns out, is not a list of ‘don’ts’ but a list of ‘dos’,” Culatta says. “And never has it been more important than it is now.”

Recently, the world of virtual reality was shaken up when the popular Merge Cube by Merge VR dropped in price from $15 to just a dollar at many Walmart stores. When using specific apps, these cubes showcase different experiences as you rotate the block around with your hands. If you haven’t held a Merge Cube yet, they're made of a soft rubber material that’s comparable to a stiffer stress ball. (If you want to test out the apps first, you can print out a temporary paper cube.)

App of the Week: A go-to literacy source | education technology | Scoop.it
Checkology® Virtual Classroom is a news- and media-literacy learning platform created by the News Literacy Project. Checkology’s aim is to help students more critically navigate today’s ever-changing media and digital landscape. The site boasts four modules that each contain lessons, student challenges, and discussions. The lessons’ panelists are journalists from the New York Times, Buzzfeed, and the Washington Post, to name a few. There’s also a “check tool” that allows students to evaluate the credibility of any piece of news they may be uncertain of, following the news-literacy principles they learned throughout checkology’s lessons

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought | education technology | Scoop.it

"The interest in inquiry-based learning seems to ebb and flow based on–well, it’s not clear why it ever ebbs.

In short, it is a student-centered, Constructivist approach to learning that requires critical thinking, and benefits from technology, collaboration, resourcefulness, and other modern learning skills that never seem to fall out of favor themselves.

Regardless, St Oliver Plunkett Primary School has put together two very useful images that can help you populate your iPad–or classroom of iPads–with apps that support both inquiry-based learning (the second image below), and a more general approach to pedagogy based on Apple’s uber-popular tablet (the top image)."

Another delve into the use of Apps in inquiry learning that further cements my train of thinking that the most effective way for TLs to support Inquiry learning with technology is by providing apps as support resources. Whilst incredible short and most just a preface for the attached pair of graphics it dos draw the connection that Inquiry learning is student-centred and aims to promote collaboration, resourcefulness, creativity and question asking as modern learning skills. The 1st graphic breaks educational apps into potential applications such as Search Engine, Scrapbooking, communication and multimodal. The 2nd graphic is potentially more useful as it breaks apps into phases of inquiry: Tune In, Collect/Curate and Synthesise. The apps are also identified on the left as teacher apps for guiding, facilitating and scaffolding use, whereas the left are students apps for problem solving, critical thinking, creating, collaborating and communicating.
