Robin Good's curator insight, May 24, 2014 6:19 AM

If you are looking for a live-streaming camcorder capable of shooting full 360° HD video that has an affordable price, the 360cam from Giroptic, being crowdfunded on Kickstarter, has everything you need (including the certainty that you will get one, as the project has reached its planned budget multiple times over).

The camcorder, which is very portable and easy to use, uses three ultra-sharp fish-eye lenses which are all synchronized to simultaneously capture and stitch images in real time.

The camcorder is also equipped with:

  • GPS antenna for image geotagging
  • 3 microphones
  • micro-USB
  • gyroscope for image stabilization
  • rechargeable battery
  • micro-SD card slot (up to 64GB)

The 360cam can also capture photos at 4096x2048 pixel resolution in addition to video recording and live streaming at 25/30fps encoded via H264 and saved as a standard .mp4 file.

Starts at $249 - orderable now - available December 2014

Virtual Classrooms are the future of teacher education

Virtual Classrooms are the future of teacher education | Education Technologies | Scoop.it | Scoop.it

Preparing education students to become classroom teachers is a challenging task. There are lots of skills that are easy to teach—how to write a lesson plan, or the best method for teaching basic reading skills, for example. But there are just as many skills that are nearly impossible to teach in the classroom. How can a professor teach future educators how to manage a classroom of behavioral challenges or keep their cool when a student challenges their authority? The answer may lie in the virtual classroom.

Sir Ken Robinson’s Next Act: You Are the System and You Can Change Education | EdSurge News | Education Technologies | Scoop.it | Scoop.it
Sir Ken Robinson’s views on creativity are abundantly well documented. In his 2006 TED Talk—still the most-watched of all time—he claimed that “we are educating people out of their creative capacities” and charged the current education system with being too rigid in adhering to traditional academic subjects. Kids, he argued, need time to dance, draw, create and find what they’re good at.

But he hasn’t given up on schools or education—far from it, in fact. For his follow-up act, Robinson is releasing a new book for parents on how to raise capable children who thrive in school. Make no mistake, though, he’s still shaking up the system (and redefining what that actually means).

In a wide-ranging interview, Robinson recently spoke with us about collaboration versus competition, the all-important parent-teacher relationship and what every parent and educator can do to improve education.

5 Reasons to Use MicroLearning

5 Reasons to Use MicroLearning | Education Technologies | Scoop.it | Scoop.it

MicroLearning is a form of learning that delivers key concepts in as short an amount of time as possible. It is a short, sharp, just-in-time snippet. I like to think of microLearning as 'short enough to watch standing up on the job'. It's when you need a quick tip, brush up on a specific skill or have a moment to learn about new product between customers.

What are the 5 advantages of microLearning?

1.   Timely Learning.

The greatest advantage of microLearning is time. Imagine a manager racing through their day. They have a performance management meeting with an employee but have not had the time to read up on the correct procedure to follow. Or a railway engineer arriving at a broken down train and the broken axle is something he hasn't unbolted for 12 months. Neither of them have the time to scroll through three layers on the company's Intranet, find the LMS, log on and watch the 20-minute module.

What they want is to go to their phone, open an App, and BAM! There is the 3-minute microLearning video. It's all about timely learning.

2.   Speed to Market.

One of our clients is a global Japanese car manufacturer. They require an eLearning module for every new model released. They don't have months to plan for product training. They need learning NOW! What companies require is microLearning with rapid development that matches their timeline for product delivery.

3.   Expiry Date

Learning's expiry date is faster than ever. It used to be that a learning program would last a few years before it needs refreshing but with changing products, people and systems, learning is being discarded faster and needs to be produced cheaply, yet with quality. MicroLearning is a cost effective and fast way to develop training content, making it a win/win for the companies and the learners.

4.   Pictures are powerful

Around 70% of millennials visit YouTube monthly. It is a large part of their life so it seems obvious that we should adapt learning to what they are familiar with. When millennials need to learn something, they watch a 2 minute YouTube video.

Research teaches us that if you hear something, after 3 days, you would have only retained 10% of what you learnt. If you then add a picture to that, retention increases to 65% - that's 6 times better! Using video in MicroLearning makes it stick. Our brain links what we hear to a picture and retention is greater.

5.   Mobile

One of our Pharma clients is investing in Asia. The people they are training in Asia have limited access to computers, but they all have smartphones. How do they train them? MicroLearning. They make it engaging, enjoyable, entertaining and most of all mobile compatible. The training is mobile, so that they can watch it standing up on the job, or sitting on the bus or train.

MicroLearning is certainly leading the way in creating new and exciting learning content, whilst making the process easier for both the companies and their employees. Send me a message if you'd like to find out more on our microLearning offering and what we can offer.

6 top tips to design effective Instructional Videos

6 top tips to design effective Instructional Videos | Education Technologies | Scoop.it | Scoop.it

There are a number of factors that contribute to the design and development of effective learning videos. In keeping with cognitive learning theories, video text, images, animation, and audio content should be designed to minimize cognitive load:

Segment (chunk) content carefully. When providing tutorials, use a first-person rather than a third-person perspective.Provide both spoken narration and related imagery/action. (However, for accessibility provide a means for the learner to access the text of the narration.) Use a conversational tone in the narration.Provide advance organizers and other visual and verbal cues to assist learners in schema creation.Associate content with emotion (positive or negative) to increase motivation and retention.Give the user control by including interactive tools for searching and navigation. Doing so improves both learner performance and satisfaction (Zhang, Zhou, Briggs, & Nunamaker, 2006).

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

3. Agility and adaptability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

5. Effective oral and written communication

Learning leaders everywhere: I know this might sting, but unless you hire David Copperfield to do magic tricks in the background as you execute your learning programs, no substantial number of people are going to “magically appear” unless they're actually interested in the topic.

Seems pretty logical, right? You wouldn't go see a non-favorite interview with a non-favorite, non-interesting person. Why waste time or do triple the work in an overpacked, undersupported learning management system spewing non-related materials? Why the call for mandated learning programs for streamlined workforce acumen with lack of or invisible support from the organization itself? Have employees tell you what they want!
