A Tool to Encourage Students to Self-Correct & Improve their Writing | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it
This is a marvellous tool which I intend to start using myself. It doesn't do the work for the students like a grammar or spell-checker but it does push them to think about their writing at a more stylistic level.

Russian Authorities Want Easy Access to Online Dating Logs

Russian Authorities Want Easy Access to Online Dating Logs | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

The Badoo dating network will soon be added to Russia's federal list of “information disseminators,” according to the website Roskomsvoboda, which monitors Internet freedom in Russia.

This means that the dating site will be required to keep servers in Russia, where all Russian users’ data will be stored, so that the Federal Security Service and local law enforcement can have easier access to user data and communications logs.
If the company refuses to comply, they risk being added to Russia’s Internet blacklist and banned nationwide.
This may present a challenge for Badoo. Although the 11-year-old company was founded by Russian entrepreneur Andrey Andreev, the business is registered in Cyprus and headquartered in London.
Badoo is in good company. Other sites on the list, which is 73 strong, include email services Mail.ru and Yandex and social networks Moi Mir and Vkontakte.

The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia’s Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin

The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia’s Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

In December 2013, David Satter became the first American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War. According to The Moscow Times, Russia's English language newspaper, "It was not surprising he was expelled. It was surprising it took so long.

In "The Less You Know, the Better You Sleep: Russia's Road to Terror and Dictatorship under Yeltsin and Putin", which is published by the Yale University Press, Satter describes how Boris Yeltsin presided over the criminalization of Russia and why Vladimir Putin was chosen as his success.

Central to this story are the 1999 Russian apartment bombings which were blamed on the Chechens but which, Satter argues, were actually carried out by the FSB security police. Satter's book explains the role of U.S. policies in Putin's rise and the dangers Putin's regime poses for the security of the West."

Human Brain Cloud. A massively multiplayer word association game.

Human Brain Cloud. A massively multiplayer word association game. | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

Human Brain Cloud is a very simple massively multiplayer word association game. The idea is, given a random word, a player types the first thing that comes to mind. For instance, given the word "forest", a common word players submit might be the word "tree", and this would result in a very strong directed association between "forest" and "tree".
On the other hand, given the same word "forest", fewer people might associate it with something like "birthday party", resulting in a very weak association or no association at all.

American Student Deported From Russia for Private Tutoring

American Student Deported From Russia for Private Tutoring  | Educational Resources & Ideas | Scoop.it

Yan Bonner — an American citizen studying in Russia — has been deported from the country for tutoring without a special license, the Interfax news agency reported Monday. “While studying at Kazan University he was giving private lessons in English in his free time. He didn't have a work permit or a special license,” according to the court representative.

The student was fined 2,000 rubles ($30) by the Kazan district court. Bonner filed an appeal against the decision but it was rejected.

According to local news website ProKazan.ru, Bonner came to Russia in 2012. During his time in Russia, he learned Russian and got married.
