Student growth: Teachers must show proof

The observations have made the biggest difference in the day-to-day operations of the school, consuming much of the principals’ and assistant principals’ time. Teachers are observed five times throughout the year and supplied with detailed feedback. Administrators note every interaction the teacher has with students, complete with exact quotes. They might jot down that a student had her head on her desk or how long a teacher paused between asking a question and calling on someone.

Love those boys!!!!!!

"The school analyzed the natural assets that both girls and boys bring to learning  Douglass realized that its classrooms were generally a better fit for the verbal-emotive, sit-still, take-notes, listen-carefully, multitasking girl. Teachers tended to view the natural assets that boys bring to learning—impulsivity, single-task focus, spatial-kinesthetic learning, and physical aggression—as problems. By altering strategies to accommodate these more typically male assets, Douglass helped its students succeed, as the following vignettes illustrate"

Essentially, this is about empathy.  If you can think like them, you can teach FOR them!

Educational Leadership:Teachers as Leaders:Ten Roles for Teacher Leaders | Education-Leadership | Scoop.it

Teacher leaders assume a wide range of roles to support school and student success. Whether these roles are assigned formally or shared informally, they build the entire school's capacity to improve. Because teachers can lead in a variety of ways, many teachers can serve as leaders among their peers.

So what are some of the leadership options available to teachers? The following 10 roles are a sampling of the many ways teachers can contribute to their schools' success.

Redefining Math Instruction

Redefining Math Instruction | Education-Leadership | Scoop.it

The standards build on knowledge and skills from prior grade levels as they deal with increasingly complex topics such as fractions and negative numbers. They stress conceptual understanding to ensure that students truly absorb what they are learning, instead of merely memorizing for a test, then forgetting much of what they learn.

Besides content-area knowledge, the Common Core math standards include a list of eight skills—called the Standards for Mathematical Practice—that math teachers should integrate across the curriculum. These skills are:

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.Reason abstractly and quantitatively.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.Model with mathematics.Use appropriate tools strategically.Attend to precision.Look for and make use of structure.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Ted Caron's comment, March 1, 2013 8:24 AM
Hi Mel...Love your Scoop Its! In reading this one, I think it's important that the blogger doesn't lump in these standards as evidence that CCSS calls for "digital writing." Clearly, CCSS W.6 calls for more interaction, collaboration and creative publishing vis-a-vis digital-enhanced writing. However, the other two anchor standards he references, at least to my way of thinking, should be classified less as "digital writing" and more as research collection. Student research skills are emphasized heavily in CCSS, and we should be careful about which standards we assign to what set of skills. Using the web to research requires a different set of skills (and instructional plan) than collaborative writing. In my experience, folks are very quick to substantiate technology-enhanced teaching and learning along CCSS lines. However, good writing instruction paired with effective research skills doesn't necessarily require a teacher to completely embrace certain tech tools that I commonly see associated with CCSS. Let's be clear: There's lots in CCSS that is just "old school", Padeia-style teaching. Just my thought.
