Classes a la carte: States test a new school model

Classes a la carte: States test a new school model | Education in the African Diaspora | Scoop.it

"(Reuters) - Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White has a problem with schools. They're too confining, he says."

Some schools have adopted a model that allows high school students to select their classes from a catalog which includes on-campus classes, off-campus classes and apprenticeships, and online courses.

While I perceive some benefit in curricular diversity and practical experience, I am skeptical about opening funding to vendors in the age of privatization.  Will course offerings be determined by kickbacks?  Are the students' best interests really being considered?  With education in the state that it is, is this really the most effective allocation of tax dollars?

I cringe at an age when a wealthy businessperson can flip schools and prisons like stocks and bonds.

Gazette » Classroom Storage Ideas – A Baker’s Dozen! | Education in the African Diaspora | Scoop.it

I love to find out-of-the-box solutions to organizing challenges. If I can find an inexpensive item at a yard sale or a discount store and use that find for something totally different than intended I get a sense of satisfaction. I’ve defied convention to create innovation. Here are some conventional, and unconventional, ideas for storing teaching materials.

allAfrica.com: Sierra Leone: Diamonds Lure Children Out of School (Page 1 of 2) | Education in the African Diaspora | Scoop.it

"In many families, children are becoming the breadwinners," Esate Konteh, from a local NGO in Kono Region, told IRIN. "When the civil war ended in 2002, many families had lost one or two parents. Some of them had their limbs amputated and could not work or were not eligible for employment."

Children are paid 10,000-20,000 leones (US$3-6) a day and 40,000 leones (US$12) if they find diamonds. In Kenema, to the east of the capital, and Koidu around 3,000 children are estimated to be working in the mines, but there are no official figures and the number might be much higher, Konteh said.
