A batch of single-cell protein has been produced by using electricity and carbon dioxide in a joint study by the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. Protein produced in this way can be further developed for use as food and animal feed. The method releases food production from restrictions related to the environment. The protein can be produced anywhere renewable energy, such as solar energy, is available."In practice, all the raw materials are available from the air. In the future, the technology can be transported to, for instance, deserts and other areas facing famine. One possible alternative is a home reactor, a type of domestic appliance that the consumer can use to produce the needed protein," explains Juha-Pekka Pitkänen, principal scientist at VTT.Along with food, the researchers are developing the protein to be used as animal feed. The protein created with electricity can be used as a fodder replacement, thus releasing land areas for other purposes, such as forestry. It allows food to be produced where it is needed.$$!ad_code_content_spilt_video_ad!$$"Compared to traditional agriculture, the production method currently under development does not require a location with the conditions for agriculture, such as the right temperature, humidity or a certain soil type. This allows us to use a completely automatised process to produce the animal feed required in a shipping container facility built on the farm. The method requires no pest-control substances. Only the required amount of fertiliser-like nutrients is used in the closed process. This allows us to avoid any environmental impacts, such as runoffs into water systems or the formation of powerful greenhouse gases," says Professor Jero Ahola of LUT.Tenfold energy efficiencyAccording to estimates by the researchers, the process of creating food from electricity can be nearly 10 times as energy-efficient as common photosynthesis, which is used for cultivation of soy and other products. For the product to be competitive, the production process must become even more efficient.

The Arctic that we know is full of glaciers and icebergs but the truth is the Arctic now is just a few melting ice on top of clear water. The Arctic has changed so much without us ever realising. Global warming has impacted the world much more than we have thought. Glaciers and iceberg melting are actually very scary as it shows how fast global warming is and how fast we are destroying our only place for survival. It will come and bite us back sooner or later as sea levels will rise and floods will be more prominent and if we do not play a part to stop global warming, the Arctic will be no more and our lives will be destroyed as well.

I think that this news has really shocked some people when they realise just how much the world is changing because of our presence on Earth. The effects of what we have on global warming, and on the ice caps are undeniable, yet it’s always amazing to see people flat out denying the existence of global warming itself. The ice may be melting slowly, but it’s melting surely, and if it continues on, many places across the world would no longer exists. Even now, there is news that Venice would soon be underwater due to the rising sea levels. We may think that as an individual, there’s nothing much we can do, and you’re right. The important part is that everyone’s small parts come together to make huge impact on the wold, and I feel that this will change the tide on global warming.

Climate change causes sea levels to rise, and it causes major disruption in the Arctic. Sea ice gets thinner, seasonal ice cycles are different, ecology and food chain are also experiencing disruption. To fight against Climate change, we must be able to tackle the issue of carbon emissions and pollutants that causes the increase in temperatures around the world.

Google has unveiled plans to use its Squared Online course to disrupt the education system, as it says it is “successfully” merging classroom and online learning styles, something it claims rival tech firms have failed to do.

“Squared Online bridges the gap between the classic classroom experience, where you can’t get scale, and e-learning that can sometimes be a bit dry. It offers a more experiential learning experience,” says Shuvo Saha, director of the Google Digital Academy.

The course focuses on digital marketing and is split into five modules which look at disruption, how tech is changing businesses, the rise of social and mobile, data analytics and insights.

Squared Online originally began as a face-to-face class, but the tech giant soon realised it needed more scale and so decided to create an online interactive classroom. To do this it collaborated with Avado, a professional coaching company.

This allowed it to move from 30 people attending classes three to four times a year to working with up to 400 people at a time, in a much more collaborative way.

In the past years in the U.S. many people have stopped skateboarding. Even though it has dropped in the U.S. skateboarding has become more popular in many countries around the world. Professional skateboarding has also became more common around the world. In the U.S. in 2006 10.13 million people participated in skateboarding, but in a 2015 only 6.44 million americans participated in skateboarding.  The cause of the numbers declining may be because of the number of injuries included in the sport. Also, police have started cracking down on skateboarding in towns and in some towns skateboarding is banned from the public. Even though the number of skateboarding participants has dropped there are still many skateboarders in the U.S.

I believe that food wastage is applicable in Singapore, in fact it is quite a big issue as people often over order, causing more food to be wasted. The ideas that the articles has provided is feasible in the context of Singapore, as people could buy lesser groceries so that they cannot over cook, thus reducing the wastage of food. Perhaps, some feasible solutions could be that when out, we could gauge how hungry we are and order accordingly so as to avoid wasting food, and also during corporate lunches, to not order extra. Also, we could tell the stall vendors to give us less food if we not as hungry. All these would help to decrease food wastage.

Yes, definitely. I do think that food waste is an evident issue in Singapore due to the fact that we are an affluent country that permits households to over purchase food. Due to affluence, people are able to afford better quality food in larger amounts, and most of the time do not care or are mindful about the amount that they are purchasing. I think that one way to mediate the issue is to raise awareness about the issue of food wastage not only on media, but also food places such that when consumers purchase their items they would be reminded to consume less or just enough for their needs.

I think the issue of food waste is definitely applicable to Singapore as people often buy more than they will eat. An example would be in hawker centres, where half-eaten plates of food can be seen waiting to be cleared after the lunch crowd vanishes. Singaporeans often have a "kiasu" mentality and would rather order more food and not finish it than order less and spend more time queuing for more later. Singaporeans also have really high standards when it comes to food, discarding their plate of food if they find it unpalatable or not buying food with slight blemishes that may not affect the quality of the food. I think people need to be lower their expectations because not all can be met, and trying too hard to meet them just makes the food situation worse and worse. We need to learn to be tolerant, even to little things like food being not tasty or appealing enough.
