Maslow's hierarchy becomes more internalized as we move up. What Deci describes is similar to what Habermas described as the colonization of the lifeworld.

Prior to, and more importantly, more vital to one's success are the three psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness, and competence.

The Modern Professional Learner’s Toolkit

by Jane Hart

There is a lot of interest in the behaviour of the Modern Learner, but in the context of work it is more appropriate to talk about the Modern Professional Learner. The Modern Professional Learner learns for, at and through work in many different ways – i.e. not just in formal training or e-learning, but through everyday work experiences as well as on the Web.  In doing so the Modern Professional Learner makes use of a wide variety of tools.

The Science Behind What Really Drives Performance (It's Going to Surprise You) | Education, English, Social Media and Technology | Scoop.it

Imagine you could have a skill where--in any given conversation with colleagues, clients, or subordinates--you could be keenly aware of, and even experience, their feelings and thoughts.

Sounds like some X-Men-like psychic superpower right? Well, what if I told you that anyone can have this uncanny ability and use its strength and charm to have successful conversations?

Well, you can. The superpower I refer to is called empathy.

But this skill--and it is a learned skill available to anyone--is often misunderstood because there are variations of it. I'll get to the science of it shortly.

Who is your favorite fictional teacher or mentor? Are you in awe of Albus Dumbledore's resounding wisdom, or are you more captivated by Mary Poppin's gleeful whimsy about life? How about Ms. Fizzle's silly but fun advice on making a productive mess? No matter how old you are or what you do for a living, everyone can benefit from an offbeat dollop of wisdom from beloved mentors, teachers, and guides from a variety of fiction sources like television, film, video games, and books! Just like they offered unique and entertaining insights to their own pupils, their wisdom can also enlighten us as we journey through life! While we may not be valiantly saving our country from an onslaught of Huns or harnessing the Force to conquer the Dark Side, these quotes can still apply to our own individual battles and goals. So take a moment and read these inspirational words from both classic and modern sources.

CHRISTINE OWEN's curator insight, May 22, 2015 9:29 PM

New technology must be accompanied by new pedagogies for new learning to take place. We are really only guessing at what the future holds for our students. In previous and even recent ages, we had a pattern of development to base our predictions upon. Now,the impossible is very likely, and the possible will be something else entirely tomorrow. We must ensure our students have the capacity to be adaptable and creative in their thinking to take advantage of and flourish in our world of ever improving technology and access.

That response brought to mind the in-class flip model. If you are not familiar with in-class flipping, it keeps all parts of the flipped model at school. Teachers pre-record direct instruction, which becomes a station in class for small groups of students to rotate through. While students are at their stations, the teacher would work one-to-one with some students, while others students spend time on independent activities or group work.
