The 5th ‘C’ of 21st Century Skills? Try Computational Thinking (Not Coding) | EdSurge News

The 5th ‘C’ of 21st Century Skills? Try Computational Thinking (Not Coding) | EdSurge News | Education | Scoop.it

"For better or worse, computing is pervasive, changing how and where people work, collaborate, communicate, shop, eat, travel, learn and quite simply, live. From the arts to sciences and politics, no field has been untouched.

The last decade has also seen the rise of disciplines generically described as “computational X,” where “X” stands for any one of a large range of fields from physics to journalism. Here’s what Google autocomplete shows when you type “computational.” (You can try it for yourself!)

But the big question is: Does current K-12 education equip every student with the requisite skills to become innovators and problem-solvers, or even informed citizens, to succeed in this world with pervasive computing?

Since the turn of this century, the “4C’s of 21st century” skills—critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication—have seen growing recognition as essential ingredients of school curricula. This shift has prompted an uptake in pedagogies and frameworks such as project-based learning, inquiry learning, and deeper learning across all levels of K-12 that emphasize higher order thinking over rote learning. I argue that we need computational thinking (CT) to be another core skill—or the “5th C” of 21st century skills—that is taught to all students."

Virtual Classrooms are the future of teacher education

Virtual Classrooms are the future of teacher education | Education | Scoop.it

Preparing education students to become classroom teachers is a challenging task. There are lots of skills that are easy to teach—how to write a lesson plan, or the best method for teaching basic reading skills, for example. But there are just as many skills that are nearly impossible to teach in the classroom. How can a professor teach future educators how to manage a classroom of behavioral challenges or keep their cool when a student challenges their authority? The answer may lie in the virtual classroom.

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality

The Wild and Amazing World of Augmented Reality | Education | Scoop.it
While AR isn’t difficult or expensive to use (especially when compared to 3D Printing or Maker Spaces), it does require forethought and planning. You’ll need a smartphone or tablet with a back facing camera, an augmented reality app (many free), a trigger image (you create yourself, probably for free), and an Internet connection. Then, scan the trigger image with a mobile device app and see what happens!

Although AR isn't one of my favorite uses of technology in the classroom, I do think that it can be educational if used on occasion or as a one-off activity. Kids will certainly be amazed at what they see and you can build on that initial engagement to create real authentic tasks.

7 skills your child needs to survive the changing world of work | #ModernEDU #ModernLEARNing | Education | Scoop.it

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

3. Agility and adaptability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

5. Effective oral and written communication

6. Accessing and analysing information

7. Curiosity and imagination

MOOCs, disruptive innovation and the future of higher education: A conceptual analysis: Innovations in Education and Teaching International: Vol 0, No 0

Abstract
The potential influence of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) on higher education institutions is much discussed and debated, with some arguing that MOOCs are a disruptive innovation that will radically change existing models of higher education. However, analyses of whether and how MOOCs might disrupt higher education models are relatively scarce. This paper analyses whether MOOCs should be considered a disruptive innovation according to the concept’s defining criteria. It compares characteristics of disruptive innovation with current developments in MOOCs, suggesting three perspectives – performance, benefits, and market – that can be used as a lens and analytic framework to explore and evaluate current practice. The findings indicate that MOOCs do not match all the characteristics of disruptive innovation as they are commonly identified in the literature. However, MOOCs may be a sustaining innovation that establishes new markets for learners who are not served by universities.
