Why tablets are failing miserably in higher education

Why tablets are failing miserably in higher education | Education | Scoop.it
While Apple and Google are fighting a FUD war for the hearts and minds of K-12 campuses, there's one area of education that neither has been able to penetrate with success: higher ed. Specifically, I'm referring to the conglomerate of colleges and universities across the US (and likely abroad).

4 best practices for Flipped Classroom implementation

4 best practices for Flipped Classroom implementation | Education | Scoop.it

Charles Nyakito's curator insight, December 3, 2014 4:16 AM

The idea of a flipped classroom is a wonderful idea. Teachers waste a lot of time explaining new concepts to learners which time could have been saved if the teacher had given the learners the topics in advance to research using their mobile digital devices.and simply use class time to discuss. I wish to recommend for every teacher who has not tried these ideas to do so and enjoy the magic of flipping.

"Much has been written about how massive open online courses (MOOCs) have given rise to a cast of so-called “rockstar professors.”

While rockstar professors aren’t actually a new concept, their star power has always been more-or-less confined to the campus where they teach — unless, of course, they get their own TV show, like this guy –>."

7 Ways You Can Use Texting to Your Advantage in the Classroom

7 Ways You Can Use Texting to Your Advantage in the Classroom | Education | Scoop.it

"If you were to take a glance around a classroom in which no smartphone policy has been set, it would be easy to conclude that texting at school is nothing but a distraction. Just look at all of those bent heads and rapidly moving thumbs! Take a look at the caliber of those texts — “wat r u doing l8er” — and it would also be easy to assume texting will one day bring about the end of literacy and analytical thought, if it hasn’t already."

Literacy Through Photography for English-Language Learners

Literacy Through Photography for English-Language Learners | Education | Scoop.it

"Enter most schools and you will hear about literacy instruction or the "literacy block." However, literacy is not a subject -- it is something much bigger. Paulo Freire encouraged a broader definition of literacy to include the ability to understand both "the word and the world." Literacy includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and analyzing a wide range of texts that include both print and non-print texts."

Let us remember that, in fact, "[l]iteracy includes reading, writing, listening, speaking, and analyzing a wide range of texts that include both print and non-print texts." And while I whole-heartedly agree that photographs can help ELLs learn language, I firmly believe that activities using photographs, illustrations, pictures, or visual media of any kind can help students learn and reinforce their learning, especially their literacy skills, all of them--reading, writing, listening, speaking, and analyzing.

Dr. Laura Sheneman's curator insight, December 3, 2014 9:08 AM

"A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:

raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems."

A New Wonderful Google Forms Cheat Sheet for Teachers ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Education | Scoop.it
Google Forms is one of the powerful tools you want to make sure you have in your teaching toolkit. There are different ways you can use it with your students in class. You can, for instance, use it to create quizzes, polls, questionnaires, and surveys. You can also use it to design permission forms, absence slips, classroom events forms…you name it. The great thing about Google Forms, besides being free and easy to use, is the fact that it is integrated with Google Drive which means that any form you create is automatically saved in your Drive and you can access it anywhere you go with Internet connection.

Wow, what a wonderful graphic! Thank you for curating this one. I like the way it make it very easy to scan multiple ICT possibilities very quickly. Its like a immediate brainstorm of what to so with ICT. It does not mention SAMR directly, instead it categorizes the different technologies into their various uses and the goal that they may meet. I like it a lot. No tags there, so I'll add a couple: SAMR, Digital classroom and ICT.

How Rural Schools Paid for Students’ Home Internet to Transform Learning

How Rural Schools Paid for Students’ Home Internet to Transform Learning | Education | Scoop.it

"Like many districts serving low-income populations, it was fairly easy for Piedmont City School District officials in Alabama to find funds for devices. District officials wanted to leverage technology to open up opportunities for the 1,240 students in this rural community, so they started sending devices home with kids in grades 4-12 in 2009 through a program they call mPower Piedmont. However, lack of access to the Internet after school and in kids’ homes became a major obstacle to learning with those devices."

Do you live in a rural area.  No internet service.  Well then, this is a must read.  This school district has formulated a plan to get internet service to those students that live outside of the city internet scope.  The school district found money in the budget to acquire hot spot to issue to those student that needed them.  The hotspots connected to the internet as well as the schools network.  This allowed the students to do their research and complete any assignments that require the schools network.  I home-school my children and the school district where I live reimburses us for our internet after every semester.
