Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic

Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic | Education | Scoop.it

Teaching students the importance of having and using manners is nothing new to teachers. However, what has changed is the type of etiquette kids needs today—namely, the digital kind. True, please, thank you and excuse me are still significant, but in addition to these basics, students growing up in this ever-connected, social media crazed world require much more. Concepts such as online privacy, sharing and creating a positive digital footprint through the demonstration of responsible online behaviors are just as vital.

Technology changes at such a rapid rate that it is tough to look ahead and envision where it will be in five years let alone fifty years...but that is what this infographic does. This timeline focuses on digital and mobile as well as big data, and references are provided for the information.
Check it out and see if you agree or disagree.

Gary Faust's curator insight, May 22, 2013 10:01 PM

Very interesting. Product development is possible, but the human brain has capabilities that a computer sill not surpass in that time. I doubt we understand the human brain sufficiently at this time to speculate about a computer's comparitive ability. Good ideas for science fiction writers, though.

Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, May 26, 2013 12:07 AM

Predictions over the the next 10 years are usually better focused and more possible.  As the event horizon extends things get wilder. This infographic will give you food for thought.

The Best Resources For Learning About Formative Assessment | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day…

The Best Resources For Learning About Formative Assessment | Larry Ferlazzo’s Websites of the Day… | Education | Scoop.it

For those who might be new to the term, formative assessments are ongoing practices that help both the teacher and student evaluate and reflect on how they are both doing, and what changes either or both might need to make to become a more effective teacher and learner (I’d love it if someone left a comment with a better definition). I use a lot of these in my classroom, ranging from regular cloze (fill-in-the-blank) and reading fluency assessments, to “show me with thumbs,” to observations. I feel that I use them pretty effectively, but also feel that I could do a better job applying what I learn from them in the classroom.

David Foster Wallace’s Timeless Graduation Speech on the Meaning of Life, Adapted in a Short Film

David Foster Wallace’s Timeless Graduation Speech on the Meaning of Life, Adapted in a Short Film | Education | Scoop.it

by Maria Popova

"On May 21, 2005, David Foster Wallace got up before the graduating class of Kenyon college and delivered one of history’s most memorable commencement addresses. It wasn’t until Wallace’s death in 2008 that the speech took on a life of its own under the title This Is Water, and was even adapted into a short book. Now, the fine folks of The Glossary have remixed an abridged version of Wallace’s original audio with a sequence of aptly chosen images to give one pause:"

Wallace: “The real value of a real education … has almost nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with simple awareness.”
