The 5 Tips for Student Success That a Longtime Instructor Swears By

The 5 Tips for Student Success That a Longtime Instructor Swears By | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
A community-college administrator shares his approach, which he credits with increasing the number of graduates by 67 percent.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

I like the majority of these tips, but toned down a bit, as many instructors are pressed for time. FYI: Don't read the comments to this article-they are brutal! I provide digital student surveys, to get info about the student's background at the beginning of a course, plus ask students to commit to learning..by being patient with their own mistakes.

Setting clear learning objectives are a good idea, though that "tip" is repeated everywhere I look..And one five to ten minute video per unit should be enough, vs ten minute videos for each learning objective otherwise, students won't bother..and faculty could get overwhelmed..

I do like to give weekly quizzes, so my students buy the book (I made sure the book costs under $30, $20 used). I also provide peer assignments, so students learn what it is like to evaluate each other and hear a different voice. But group assignments can be tricky to set up, until you know your students fairly well. And essays can be lengthy to grade, too, and not necessary a useful assessment tool  in some STEM classes.

Why are CS students so hard to nudge? A theory for why it’s so hard to promote a growth mindset

Why are CS students so hard to nudge? A theory for why it’s so hard to promote a growth mindset  | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Pearson took a lot of heat recently for trying to improve students' mindset in My Programming Lab.  I'm slightly worried about the ethics of their "embedded experiment." I'm more worried that it didn't work.

Duke University administrator accused of getting two employees fired in racially tinged incident | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
After a Duke University administrator complained about rap music being played at a campus coffee shop, two baristas working their shifts were let go, inspiring campus -- and national -- ire.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

A Duke employee in the hot seat..if he hadn't made his views known on free speech, and discussed Confederate statues, no less, the incident may not have caused as much of a stink, but his actions don't pass a smell test..

Teacher tricks: Grading & assessment

Teacher tricks: Grading & assessment | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it

Grading & assessments are a hot potato in the field of education, as decision makers try to at once apply common standards, but also limit the amount of time students spend sitting assessments.

Becky Roehrs's insight:

Excellent tips to reduce your grading time-but still make sure your students are learning what is most important. I cut out the number of discussion forums I graded in my online course, since it took too much time to grade, without adding as much value as assignments do...depends on  your content, what types of assessments help your students the most!

Course Workload: What Influences Student Perceptions?

Course Workload: What Influences Student Perceptions? | Education and Tech Tools | Scoop.it
What makes students think that the workload in a course is heavy or light? Sometimes it’s the amount of content and the array of different topics covered in the course. However, it can also be that the course covers complex content or content students find difficult which gives it that heavy label.
Becky Roehrs's insight:

It may not matter how much work you assign, it matters how students perceive it.. if students like the subject, it may not seem like a lot of "work", no matter how much you assign...
