Pearson Partners with Two Universities on Competency-Based Learning Degree - Chief Learning Officer

Pearson Partners with Two Universities on Competency-Based Learning Degree - Chief Learning Officer | Education and IT | Scoop.it

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and College for All Texans Foundation have partnered with Pearson to work with two state institutions — Texas A&M University-Commerce and South Texas College — to create a competency-based learning Bachelor of Applied Sciences, or BAS, degree in organizational leadership.

The program is called the Texas Affordable Baccalaureate Project, or TAB, and is supported by an EDUCAUSE Next Generation Learning Challenges, or NGLC, grant, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Faculty from both institutions are leading the curriculum design effort with Pearson, assisting in the development of 90 credit hours of online competency-based courses and providing custom curriculum and instructional design that aligns with the competencies established by the faculty. The program will launch in spring 2014 and is expected to serve 250 students in its first year and enroll more than 6,000 students by 2019.

Infographics can be more effective and memorable than other ways to present data, making them particularly effective for online audiences.

To create an infographic, you should make a list of possible ideas that you want to get across, create the initial draft or skeleton, color scheme it, and research your content from authoritative sites. Then it’s time to select your design platform.

The Student Achievement Measure (SAM) provides a comprehensive picture of student progress on the path to earning a college degree or certificate. SAM reports aggregate outcomes for a group of students who start at a college or university at the same time. Unlike typical graduation rate measures, which report only the percentage of students who graduate from their first institution, SAM includes the percentage of students who are still working toward a degree and those who transfer to another institution.

14 World-Changing Data Visualizations from the Last 4 Centuries

14 World-Changing Data Visualizations from the Last 4 Centuries | Education and IT | Scoop.it

Science may be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be ugly. These images, from a new exhibit at the British Library, show how beautiful scientific data can be.

The exhibit features classic illustrations dating to 1603, including John Snow’s map of London’s SoHo that’s credited with revealing a contaminated water pump as the source of a 1854 cholera outbreak. There also are beautiful modern visualizations of data from satellites and gene sequencers. The exhibit, Beautiful Science: Picturing Data, Inspiring Insight, runs through May 26.
