How to create a Learning Environment people actually want to be part of

How to create a Learning Environment people actually want to be part of | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

Learning leaders everywhere: I know this might sting, but unless you hire David Copperfield to do magic tricks in the background as you execute your learning programs, no substantial number of people are going to “magically appear” unless they're actually interested in the topic.

Seems pretty logical, right? You wouldn't go see a non-favorite interview with a non-favorite, non-interesting person. Why waste time or do triple the work in an overpacked, undersupported learning management system spewing non-related materials? Why the call for mandated learning programs for streamlined workforce acumen with lack of or invisible support from the organization itself? Have employees tell you what they want!

El Aprendizaje Dinámico

El Aprendizaje Dinámico | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

Using Critical Thinking to prepare students for success

Using Critical Thinking to prepare students for success | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

The average Google search takes less than 30 seconds to produce millions of responses, putting gigabytes of information—some true, some not—at users’ fingertips in an instant. And oftentimes, those users are high school students.

“My kids are online a lot,” says Eileen Murphy, the CEO and Founder of ThinkCERCA. “I’ve seen firsthand that the amount of misinformation out there is striking.”

“There are no rules anymore,” Eileen adds.

“Bad information passes as fact,” Eileen says. “Entire communities are built online to validate points of view without reasoning or evidence.”

Eileen founded ThinkCERCA to teach students the critical thinking skills they need to thrive in the 21st century—including overcoming this influx of misinformation.

Social Media helps students learn scientific argumentation better, study says

Social Media helps students learn scientific argumentation better, study says  | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

Adults often bemoan the amount of time young people spend staring at a screen and browsing social media. But social media can not only be a way to teach students elements of the scientific process, those who took part in a program to learn scientific argumentation through social media learned the components of argumentation better than their peers who did not, a University of Kansas study has found.

KU researchers designed a curriculum unit to engage nearly 400 ninth-grade biology students in learning about scientific argumentation through social media use with their teachers and classmates. Argumentation is a key element of both Next Generation Science Standards and Common Core State Standards. The researchers have since authored a chapter for the book "Digital Tools and Solutions for Inquiry-Based STEM Learning," an article in the Journal of Education in Science, Environment and Health and an article in Educational Media International, a Taylor & Francis online journal outlining the study, its results and how teachers can implement similar practices in their classrooms.

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why

The Future of Education is Unstructured Learning, and Here's Why | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it
Unstructured learning is an authentic real-world way of learning. That’s because the real world itself doesn’t have neat compartments or set disciplines for success. It demands adaptability, patience, and a willingness to learn and to use what is learned in the moment. Most of all, it requires us to take full responsibility for what we learn.

It’s time to play and to let go of rigid teaching in favour of unstructured learning. For this to happen, teachers have to foster trust in their students. They have to be willing to take a step back and put a little slack on the reins of traditional pedagogy. In short, we need to let things get a little messy. Ease into it—it’s a bold step and it will transform everything.

[PDF] eLearning trends for 2018 You can’t ignore

[PDF] eLearning trends for 2018 You can’t ignore | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

The eLearning industry is in a constant state of flux – constantly adapting and changing as technology, user needs, and best practices change.

In recent years, we’ve seen significant budget allocation directed towards eLearning initiatives. When companies put their money where their mouths are, it’s a clear indication of the organizational priorities at play. As well, there has been a noted increase in eLearning initiatives in global geographic markets that align with a shift towards the prioritization of training and developments in markets, worldwide.

With many organizations now exploring new opportunities and experimental approaches to L&D that include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, technology-supported personalized learning, and Big Data analytics, the question becomes how can companies adequately prepare themselves for the evolution of eLearning trends and what they mean for their learners?

Why are schools so bad at preparing students for Modern Jobs?

Why are schools so bad at preparing students for Modern Jobs? | Ed Tech & eLearning | Scoop.it

If schools are supposed to be training the workers of the future, the growing consensus is that most of them are not doing a very good job of it.

In a trend that seems long overdue, technology-based companies are increasingly turning inward to bridge the gap between the skills they need employees have and the skills they’re actually graduating from college with.

In 8 Critical Skills For A Modern Education, we offered one view of what ‘modern workplace’ skills might look like, and have argued many times that true ’21st-century learning’ should change what work looks like all together.

(Nevermind that, in our estimation anyway, the purpose of school is not job training.)

Still, companies (for now, anyway) need human workers with certain skills that, increasingly, they just don’t have. It’s nearly 2018, and the concept of 21st-century skills is more than two decades old now.

What’s the tether?
