How to use Apple’s terrific document scanner in iOS 11 - The Verge

How to use Apple’s terrific document scanner in iOS 11 - The Verge | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
One of the most useful tricks in Apple’s iOS 11 update is found inside the Notes app: it’s a document scanner. If there’s a business card, receipt, or any other document you want to save or mark up, this tool makes getting it on your iPhone or iPad dead simple. If you’ve been using a third-party app for this purpose until now — and there are several great ones — you can probably uninstall it in favor of Apple’s own solution. That’s what I did, anyway.

Build a Simple Circuit From a Pizza Box (No Soldering)

Build a Simple Circuit From a Pizza Box (No Soldering) | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
I learn best through tactile teaching methods.  Teaching and learning basic circuits, electronics, and electricity from books is good, but why not build a simple circuit from scratch and learn from doing.  This is a great way to get hands on and teach/learn the basics of electricity.  With this project you can change the path of the electric current to run through different sensors.  With this design you can switch between lighting a Blue LED or activating a Buzzer.  You also have the choice of using a Light Dependent Resistor with the LED or Buzzer.  You can be creative and design your own circuit and add different sensors (other LEDs...).

Portable Green Screens in the Library - Library Adventuring - Tim Ley @Tfley

Portable Green Screens in the Library - Library Adventuring - Tim Ley @Tfley | Edu Technology | Scoop.it

Earlier in the school year my students created whole-class videos using our large green screen studio. While I assigned students a variety of tasks (director, camera operator, acting coach), my students spent the majority of their time on the carpet as an audience member. At the end of these units I wondered how we could increase student ownership of the production. Could I have my students create a green screen movie without having to play the audience member for large portions of the time? Could they be empowered to create a movie independently of the teacher? Could this be done by kindergartners and first graders?

For most of the school year I struggled with these questions. That was until I met Brenda Windsor and Mary O'Neil of Trumbull, CT at the Fairfield University "Education Technology Collaboration Day" in March.  Brenda and Mary presented on how they have incorporated green screens in the classroom, and shared the idea of using a pizza box to make a miniature portable studio. Here is a link to the video they created.  From that moment, I was on a mission to have my K-2 students write, direct, film & star in their own collaborative group mini green screen movies. "

What a great idea-use pizza boxes as your green screens for your iPads (or smartphones), add (tape) green (paper) to rulers, then add (tape) animal cutouts (or people, monsters, aliens) to your green rulers, and move your rulers around on your green screen pizza box! You're ready for a live-action video production.

12 Best Lego Technic Sets: Lego for Techies! | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
Since 1934, Lego has been a staple in every kids playroom. From wooden toys, to plastic blocks, Lego has now embraced the tech generation with their Lego Technic sets. Kids can build, animate, and play popular vehicles and equipment, as well as learning important design and engineering basics. Created with learning in mind, they feature movable and working parts. Some kits will include a motor to power up the vehicle, while other smaller sets don’t include a motor, but are compatible with a powered motor add on kit. The more complex builds are geared towards older kids, while the easier basic models are a good start for younger builders. Here are the 12 best Lego Technic sets that are sure to get kids more interested in how moving parts work.

Sphero Edu + Swift Playgrounds – Sphero Edu – Medium

Sphero Edu + Swift Playgrounds – Sphero Edu – Medium | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
At the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in 2016, Apple announced Swift Playgrounds, a revolutionary app for the iPad that makes learning the Swift language interactive and fun for all learners. Swift Playgrounds is essentially a video game that teaches kids how to code using Apple’s Swift programming language. The interface allows you see what you’re creating with code as you write it — type your code on the left and immediately see the result on the right. Earlier in 2017, the Sphero Edu team partnered with Apple to build the first integrated Playground content designed to control real world robots. On June 5th at WWDC, Apple unveiled the new content that is now part of the Swift Playgrounds app. Thanks to our new partnership, you can now program real world robots including Sphero’s very own SPRK+.

Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric

Creating an Authentic Maker Education Rubric | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
While many teachers are excited about the maker movement and may even be creating projects for their classrooms, assessment can be puzzling even to veteran classroom teachers. How can teachers prove that deep, rich learning is occurring through making? How do we justify a grade to students and parents alike, especially to the student who "just isn’t good at art"? By crafting a three-part rubric that assesses process, understanding, and product, teachers can rest assured that they are covering all the bases.

Adobe launches free document scanning app for Android and iOS

Adobe launches free document scanning app for Android and iOS | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
Adobe is getting into the mobile scanning game with a new free iOS and Android app that is supposed to provide users with high-quality images of physical content they want to capture digitally.

It’s called Adobe Scan, and it works similarly to a bunch of other apps already available. Users point their smartphone cameras at whatever document, white board, or presentation screen they want to capture, and the app automatically crops the image to just pick out a document.

The clearest difference between Scan and other apps, like Microsoft Lens, is that the app integrates with Adobe Document Cloud and automatically performs optical character recognition on the PDFs it generates. Users can then copy and paste text from those documents into other files.

Design Thinking & Book Creator - Book Creator app

Design Thinking & Book Creator - Book Creator app | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
hen employing Design Thinking in the classroom, documenting each step in the process presents a challenge to teachers as well as students. However, the multimedia capabilities of Book Creator offer up a robust solution to this problem.

First, with Book Creator, students can use a variety of media to document their work. Next, teachers can create multimedia templates to guide and scaffold their students through the Design Thinking process. Finally, completed design books can be published in a number of ways, allowing students to showcase not only their completed work but their thinking along the way.

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour

This free course can teach you music programming basics in less than an hour | Edu Technology | Scoop.it
Ableton, A Berlin-based music software company, just released a free interactive music course that runs right in your browser.
One thing that immediately struck me about their web app was how well it was built. For example, if you change the tab, the music will fade out, then fade back in when you return. And if you start one sequencer, then scroll down and start another sequencer, it will automatically pause the first one.
It also has fun, easy to understand interfaces for programming music.
