Open-Access Journal Underdogs Take on Aging Academic Publications

Open-Access Journal Underdogs Take on Aging Academic Publications | EdTech | Scoop.it
Academics take sides in the war between aging publications and open-access journals.
Jonathan Flynn's insight:

And may it continue until the monopoly that allows the big publishers to charge exorbitant fees and hold publicly funded knowledge hostage is broken. Hopefully open access journals can grow in prestige and distinction so that academics don't feel that submitting to journals owned and controlled by the big publishers is the only option for their careers.

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (And How To Correct Them) - Edudemic

5 Critical Mistakes Schools Make With iPads (And How To Correct Them) - Edudemic | EdTech | Scoop.it
While we’ve witnessed many effective approaches to incorporating iPads successfully in the classroom, we’re struck by the common mistakes many schools are making with iPads, mistakes that are in some cases crippling the success of these initiatives. We’re sharing these common challenges with you, so your school doesn’t have to make them.
Jonathan Flynn's insight:

I would say Point 5 is far and away the biggest mistake. The "Let's throw technology at them" approach to learning technology is far too prevalent, benefits nobody and can backfire spectacularly in the shape of huge cost for little benefit.

In addressing this point, I'm happy to see the article focus on the importance of an overall vision to introducing new tech, but I think it overstates the power of the iPad somewhat. Even a visionary and well-thought implementation can ultimately fall flat if an iOS update three years down the line renders the tech obsolete or incompatible with the Apps needed for all that "consumption, curation and creativity" the piece highlights. And that's before even considering the additional budgetary strain of all those Apps in the first place.

The medium is the message. The medium defines, changes, and distorts the message. The words "I love you" mean one hundred different things spoken by one hundred different people. Those words convey...
Jonathan Flynn's insight:

I don't quite get some of the math content, but the overall point is a good, if pointedly made, one. Also a lot of interesting links to comments and further discussions that grew out of this blog post, many of which are worth following up on, but in particular the "jfarmer" response (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3563402) about what technology is good for.

The Teacher's Guide To Twitter - Edudemic | EdTech | Scoop.it
This teacher's guide to Twitter is designed for anyone ready to use the service or already old hat. Whatever your skill level, this should help!
Jonathan Flynn's insight:

A good starting point. The problem with Twitter as I see it is the lack of orientation for new users. And the UI isn't the greatest. Tweetdeck is a much more useful interface for efficiently parsing and managing your areas of interest.

How To Make the Most of a Video Introduction for an Online Course -- Campus Technology | EdTech | Scoop.it
From an instructor's perspective, there is a great deal of thought that goes into the creation of a new course in Moodle — everything from the template and color scheme to the best way to relay contact information. One of the most important considerations, however, might also be one of the most overlooked: How do you greet the students?
