ONLINE DATABASE-ZOHO CREATOR

This online database software engages student as it is made easy. Students can use a drag-and-drop builder to create simple databases.

https://www.youtube.com/watchfeature=player_embedded&v=2jE9wO6EfJM

OUTCOMES:
5.7.2 ELEMENTS

b) describe some relationships between using the Periodic table

4/5.16 GATHERING INFORMATION FROM SECONDARY SOURCES

a) Use a range of sources, including databases, CD ROMS and the internet, to access information
d) summarise information from identified oral and written secondary sources
4/5.17 PROCESSING INFORMATION

a) collate information from a number of sources

b) distinguish between relevant and irrelevant information
4/5.22.2 WORKING IN TEAMS

ACTIVITY:
Students in groups of 4 are asked to create a data base using zoho creator. Each group has a different group of the elements of the periodic table which that have to extensively research. The teacher then collects all the students databases and creates one databases incorporating all the groups databases- a complete database on the periodic table is created. This is then uploaded for the students to have.

SIMPLE SPREADSHEET

SIMPLE SPREADSHEET | SKILL BASED ACTIVITIES | Scoop.it

Simple spreadsheet is a web-based spreadsheet program that features formulas, charts, numeric formats, keyboard navigation and plenty more! It allows students to perform calculations on the data. Using this online tool students are able to record data from their experiments and share it with their peers and teachers. Students will be engaged in the simplicity of this program.

OUTCOMES:

5.9.4 NATURAL EVENTS

a) Explain some impacts of natural events including cyclones, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and/or biosphere.

 4/5.14 PERFORMING FIRST-HAND INVESTIGATIONS

a) Follow the planned procedure when performing an investigation

b) Use time and resources effectively

c) Safely and effectively construct, assemble and manipulate identified equipment

d) Record data using the appropriate units

e) Evaluate and modify experimental procedures

f) Demonstrate the use of safe and hygienic work practices including the correct use of safety equipment.

ACTIVITY:

Students use an online earthquake simulation http://news.discovery.com/tech/tags/interactive.htm to explore where it is best to build and how to construct buildings that have better chances of surviving an earthquake. Students record data in the simple spreadsheet. On completion, students reflect their data and answer questions e.g. ‘did you find that the location of a building makes a difference, if so why?’ Upload spreadsheets on a system so students’ peers can view.

CHARTGO

CHARTGO | SKILL BASED ACTIVITIES | Scoop.it

ChartGo is a very simple online program that enables students to graph, create pie charts, bar charts, line charts or area charts. Results from an experiment can be quickly turned into graphs with the students perferred settings. Furthemore, these graphs can be uploaded onto a system or printed.

OUTCOMES:
5.6.3 ELECTRICAL ENERGY

c) describe qualitatively the relationship between voltage, resistance and current

4/5.17 PROCESSING INFORMATION
g) apply mathematical concepts and computer based technologies to assist anaylsis of data and information

4/5.18 PRESENTING INFORMATION

f) select and draw the appropiate type of graph or diagram to convey information and relationships clearly and accurately

ACTIVITY:
Teachers can demonstrate an experiment to show the relationship between voltage, resistance and current. Teacher can write up numerical values of results on the whiteboard and ask students to graph these results using chartgo and draw conclusions of the reltionship.
