PORT MORESBY, PNG ---The International Petroleum Investment Company (IPIC) was a win-win deal for Papua New Guinea that left no debt when concluded, says Sir Michael Somare.

PNG made a deal with the International Petroleum Investment company that was ideal for them both. The deal required that the gov't maintained maximum equity, and that it wouldn't increase the country's debt.

PNG has a possibility of joining the EITI, which extracts natural resources to bring profits to their gov. By joining PNG will be able to utilize their many natural resources as profits for their gov. These profits could go towards improving life for the third of the pop. in extreme poverty.

A British think-tank says Papua New Guinea could improve its forest governance by negotiating a Forest Partnership Agreement with the European Union (EU).

PNG isn't taking full advantage of it's forests and they're not treated very well. Think tanks say it would be in PNG's best interest to partner with the EU though in the past the EU has been uninterested. Other countries have reached out, but PNG has been left behind. It has recently completed a new legality standard although it is not gov't sponsored.
