EDM festivals seek remedies for when concerts boil over

EDM festivals seek remedies for when concerts boil over | EDM Festivals and drug association | Scoop.it
Roiled by a number of drug- and alcohol-related hospitalizations and deaths, EDM festivals try to persuade concertgoes to stay sober.
Lou OC's insight:

I do not really like this article because it is saying that EDM is only associated with "Molly" and drug use.  Which is not the case at all, it is about "PLUR" which is (Peace Love Unity Respect.)  Its about people coming together for a purpose and for the love of music.  There will always be drugs everywhere, at any concert no matter what genre of music.

To Curb Drug Use, an Electronic Music Concert in Brooklyn Restricts What Guests Can Bring

To Curb Drug Use, an Electronic Music Concert in Brooklyn Restricts What Guests Can Bring | EDM Festivals and drug association | Scoop.it
In the wake of several deaths related to Ecstasy, the Mad Decent Block Party this weekend will prohibit masks, pacifiers, dolls, eyedroppers, spray paint, unsealed tampons and other items.
Lou OC's insight:

I feel that they are trying to fight something that is never going to go away.  The intense measures they are going through to keep things safe, its nice but even with the thorough searches and dogs I'm sure they didn't find as much as they anticipated.  I think it is a good thing that they are trying to keep drugs out of shows and festivals, but it will always be a battle unfortunately.

The Truth About EDM Culture

The Truth About EDM Culture | EDM Festivals and drug association | Scoop.it
Electronic dance music (EDM) culture is stigmatized by substance abuse and escapism. The festivals around which it is centered -- like Electric Zoo, Ultra or Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) -- are less so focused on specific DJs than the experience of ...
Lou OC's insight:

I believe that this article helps to support the main ideas behind EDM culture, A young man named Jose who is paralyzed with a spinal condition states that "If people could just treat each other the way they treat each other at EDC ... the world would be a much better place".  The rave community is more than just drugs, its about the music, the experience, meeting new people and coming together as a whole community.

Drugs, Death and Dance Music

Drugs, Death and Dance Music | EDM Festivals and drug association | Scoop.it
Two died at Electric Zoo, but are raves really more dangerous than other events?
Lou OC's insight:

In my opinion, the way that it was described at the end of the article where it says, "The EDM culture exists because kids like to get fucked up and dance, right now, this crowd's doing it in electronic music. In 1969, it was called Woodstock." (Concert Business Source).  There will always be younger generations coming up with new ideas and ways to go out and push the limits of the human body.

Max Hutchison's curator insight, February 15, 2015 6:47 PM

This article brings up an interesting point at the end saying the EDM culture only exists because the drug culture is still going strong among the younger generation. In my opinion, whether it's electronic music or psychedelic music. The kids of each generation will always find a way to push each party to an excessive point. Whether it will be the downfall of the industry, only time will tell.

Festival Deaths on the Rise in the EDM World

Festival Deaths on the Rise in the EDM World | EDM Festivals and drug association | Scoop.it
On July 18, a student was found dead of undetermined causes at Pemberton Music Festival in British Columbia.
Lou OC's insight:

It is a good thing that they are trying to make it more safe, but instead of getting more police and drug sniffing dogs other options could be discussed.  Free water stations, cooling tents, etc.  keeping hydrated and energized during a festival can be hard so cutting down on lines by adding in additional stations for water and food or fruit could be highly beneficial.
