Scottish Sun: have confirmed that new electric trains will be introduced between Edinburgh and Glasgow this weekend. The first of ten electric trains which will boost capacity between the two cities be used from late Saturday evening.

One eight-carriage train will be used, increasing the number of electric services to five out of eight services per hour in total. The remaining trains will be phased in in the coming weeks. Eventually seven of the eight trains per hour along the route will be electric, and customers will benefit from an extra 17,200 seats per day.

Scottish Licensed Trade News: More than 80 venues have confirmed they will take part in this autumn’s Edinburgh Cocktail Week. The event had previously been run as a weekend but high demand is said to have led to the enlarged format, which will see seven days of mixology in the capital, from October 15 to 21.

Scottish business News Network: Redevelopment of the former Fountain Brewery site in the Fountainbridge area of Edinburgh has moved a step closer after council planners approved the first phase on Wednesday. The proposal, from Vastint Hospitality, will regenerate a well-known site that has had a mixed history and has remained vacant since the Fountain Brewery closed in 2004.

The facility recorded the busiest-ever year for a Scottish airport in 2017, handling more than 13.4 million passengers, an increase of 8.6 per cent on the previous year. Express: Edinburgh scientists have genetically engineered a new breed of “superpig” totally resistant to a disease so devastating it has been nicknamed “the billion dollar virus”. Exposed to the bug – Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome, or PRRS – the superpigs do not become infected at all.

Edinburgh Reporter: Underbelly Limited were appointed in March 2017 to run Edinburgh’s Christmas and Edinburgh’s Hogmanay for the council. Now they have reported to the council with details on the 2017/18 event and more importantly, the numbers. The report went before the Culture Committee yesterday.

Figures show that at the 2017-18 Christmas event ticket sales rose by 9.1% on the previous year. The organisers counted almost 1 million people in St Andrew Square, 1.3 million in George Street and 3.4 million people across all of the Christmas sites.
