This website, learnzillion.com, provides a lot of lessons, many of which are clearly aligned with common core, that can be shown in video to the class. This lesson focuses on place value, with emphasis on decimal places. This is something my students struggled with a lot. I like how the lesson analyzes exactly why the base ten system works the way it does as far as multiplying or dividing by ten with each place moved left or right respectively. The only issue I have with this lesson is that it is not engaging and does not do much to keep the students' attention. I worry that they would be come bored, so I would have to stop often and intervene to ensure that not only do they grasp the concept, but also that they are following along with the video and staying on task.

## Bingo: Fractions and Decimals

This is a good game for both whole class (both in class and maybe during indoor recess) or  centers once it has been explained. In our centers, we like to have fun activities that are still educational. It can be a little confusing at first, but once it is explained, I would trust the students to be able to manage it themselves. My class has not yet gone into fractions, that is our next unit. When we get to fractions, it will be important for their recollection ability to remember that these fractions are equivalent to their respective decimals. This will make solving problems and comprehending concepts much easier.

## Ordering Decimal Thousandths (A) Decimals Worksheet

My students needed a lot of practice ordering decimals. They really got hung up on place value. Too many students thought that 9.2 was equivalent to 9.02. Even when we got them to realize that 9.2 = 9.20, as soon as they saw a new problem, they went back to mistaking tenths for hundredths. We spent far too long stressing decimal place value, and because of this, we lost a lot of valuable time and had to rush through other material. The other issue we had was real life applications. There was one question on the test which gave times for a race and asked which swimmer won the race. Most of the students were able to put the decimals in the correct order with the exception of the mistake I mentioned before, but far too many told us that the swimmer with the greatest time won, when in fact the winner of a race is the participant with the lowest time. The issue I have with this is while it goes into the thousandths place (they do have one that only goes to the hundredths place but also includes tenths), it covers thousandths and some hundredths. Ideally, I would like something that covers differences in tens, hundredths, thousandths, as well as changes in whole numbers. I would also like to see more emphasis on the 0 in any place, because as I mentioned before, that is what my students struggled most with.

## Multiplying Decimals

Andrew Bronstein's insight:

I like the Khan Academy videos because they provide a visual along with the audio lesson.  This helps students who are more visual learners, as well as the fact that it gives students something to visually focus on and therefore keeps their attention. I love the fact that they thoroughly explain the rule of moving the decimal point in the product the total number of places it has been moved in the two factors combined. I am skeptical about their choice of using 0.5 as the second factor.  I question it because of the 0 in the ones place. Since my students have been focusing on (and struggling with) two digit multiplication, This would prompt the question from my students, and I wish the video would at least acknowledge that they have disregarded the 0 because 0 times anything is 0 and when you add 0 to any number, the sum is that same number. I also don't like the selection of 0.5 because of what they say at the end of the video about checking. I see why they chose 0.5 so they could check this, but this would just confuse my students. They have yet to discover that multiplying by 0.5 is the same as dividing by two, or that the answer should be close to half. For this reason, I will stop the video after they get the answer.

While the computation (which is the main focus of the exercise) does not fit into what we are currently doing in my class, it can definitely be used in my future career. What I can use immediately in my internship is the place value and comparison. I don't think many of my students get this involved in baseball statistics, but if I change it to field goal, 3 point and free throw percentages, I know I would have a few students hooked.

## Math Is Fun Virtual Manipulative

This site gives you a number line that you can zoom into. I think this is helpful while explaining decimals so the students have a visual manipulative tool that helps them not only see the decimals, but see the concept of what a decimal represents. This helps because the students in my class have struggled with the concept of place value regarding decimals. This then lead to problems with ordering decimals, especially when dealing with decimals that did not have the same number of digits.

This page on Math-Drills.com has a plethora of resources for decimals. There is a lot of practice here for many different topics such as expanded form, rounding, comparing and ordering (which I went into detail about in a separate scoop). As is custom with this site, there are a lot of practice tools, but not much that teaches. However, at the top of the page, there are three tools that can be of great benefit to teaching, and they are the hundredths grid, the thousandths grid, and the decimal place value chart. I love the place value chart because it helps them keep track of place value and aids in their understanding, especially when it comes to the zero. This is the tool I used to finally kick my stragglers of the habit of thinking 2.3 = 2.03. Additionally the grids help the students picture the numbers and what they actually represent. While it is not really a manipulative, when we shade it, it serves the same purpose. The only minor faults I have with the thousandths grid is that my students were more interested in counting the rectangles to make sure they added up to one thousand, and more importantly, that the grid is arranged into 20 by 50, which I think is a little confusing because it strays away from the base of ten that we are used to seeing.

## Multiplying Decimals

I was surprised that this was the first thing that was introduced regarding decimals in the curriculum. I was not surprised that my students had (and still have to some extent) issues grasping this concept. I think that watching this video might help them understand it. The only reason I say might is because this video makes perfect sense to me or many other typical adults, but I think the academic language as well as the cognitive demand based on their explanation may be too much, especially for my BGL students. Still, if the students can focus on the visual aid, then I think it can be beneficial. Because of this, I think he best use for this video would be to play it without the sound while I go through and narrate it so that I can use vocabulary that is more condusive to what they can benefit from.

This site has a lot of different worksheets that the students can use to practice. There are all different subsets of decimal multiplication problems by number of digits and the place value of those digits. Unfortunately there is no teaching value as far as expository learning. Still, the practice is very useful at this point. By fifth grade, students should have a good enough understanding of multiplication, both single digit and double digit. The students will still need to learn the rule that the number of places the decimal point moves in the answer is equal to the number of total places the decimal point moves in both of the factors of the problem. These worksheets should help them practice that rule. The fact that the website breaks them down by place value helps ease the students into this, and then the various decimal places allows for a summative assessment so they do not just fall into habit. For example, my students have been doing 2 digit tenths times 2 digit tenths, and I now wonder if they are actually understanding the rule or if they have just realized that everything my mentor teacher gives them is going to have an answer using hundredths.

The website that I got this from is an excellent teaching resource. A lot of the things are free, although there are some things you need to pay for. We will use this in class as a center. This is specifically geared towards the lower level students since the rest of the class is supposed to move on to multiplying and dividing decimals, but from the first unit, we had far too many students who still struggled with ordering decimals. The halloween theme is excellent timing as we will be using it during the week of halloween.

We will omit the determining if the number is greater than or less than one. The fifth graders already have a good grasp of that, but the biggest issue for them the 0 and knowing that 7.4 is not the same thing as 7.04

^Because of this, I am thinking about stacking the deck or making the cards to include this skill.
