The 10,000 Hour Rule Is Wrong. How to Really Master a Skill

The 10,000 Hour Rule Is Wrong. How to Really Master a Skill | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it

Additionally, Gladwell failed to adequately distinguish between the quantity of hours spent practicing, and the quality of that practice. This misses a huge portion of Ericsson’s findings, and is the reason why Tim Ferriss scoffs at Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule in this video.

Robots in Education: What’s Here and What’s Coming

Robots in Education: What’s Here and What’s Coming | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it
As with so many types of tech, how useful (and potentially harmful) robots can be to education will have more to do with how educators and students choose to use them than with the technology itself. We may not be on the cusp of having robot teachers like in the Jetsons, but robots have already made their mark in education and will continue to do so.

Pokémon Go isn’t a fad. It’s a beginning. | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it
Augmented reality begins with Pokémon. It begins as a toy. But it won’t remain a toy. It’s going to become an industry, a constant, a coping mechanism, a way of life. It will change how we spend our time, how we compete for status, how we interact with our loved ones. It will change the behaviors we think of as normal — already we’re seeing Pokémon Go run into racism; it won’t be long until AR cuts across other fault lines in our society.

8 digital skills we must teach our children

8 digital skills we must teach our children | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it

The way children use technology is very different from adults. This gap makes it difficult for parents and educators to fully understand the risks and threats that children could face online. As a result, adults may feel unable to advise children on the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. Likewise, this gap gives rise to different perspectives of what is considered acceptable behaviour.

How Big Data is Being Used to Shape the Digital Classroom

How Big Data is Being Used to Shape the Digital Classroom | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it
MOOCs have been one of the major users of data to help learners learn better. For example, Udacity uses individual feedback. Feedback can also be offered to teachers to help them to improve. On Coursera, teachers are able to see data that indicates when students are most likely to stop watching their lessons on video, and how many students get questions right first time. This can help the teacher to see how and where they could be more effective in presenting information to help students learn.

Why do people resist new technologies? History might provide the answer

Why do people resist new technologies? History might provide the answer | Ed Tech & You | Scoop.it

The same debates we’re having today about new technologies were being had over inventions such as the printed word or cellphones, argues Calestous Juma.Innovation and Its Enemies shows that resistance to new technologies is heightened when the public perceives that the benefits of new technologies will only accrue to a small section of society, while the risks are likely to be widespread. This is why technologies promoted by large corporations often face stiff opposition from the public.
