In the end, nothing stops you from having both an online shop and a profile on a shared e-commerce platform – at least to start with.

I would always build your own site. If you want to use eBay or Amazon to boost your sales, great. However, building a business that's built entirely on the back of somebody else's business is a recipe for disaster. No responsible business owner would ever give up that level of control of their business.
