We as a species have a long way to go concerning the health of the earth. Just think that every little act does count and it does add up over time. We can reverse the downtrend in the degradation of humanities greatest possession – planet earth. Made from natural and fair-trade materials like soy, organic cotton, bamboo, and leather-alternatives, clothing and accessories are eco-conscious, socially responsible and stylish at the same time. After attending the 2013 International Spa Association (ISPA) annual conference, it certainly was apparent to me that all is well and good in the wellness industry.  From my observations, the $14+ billion U.S. market looks to be growing at a steady and healthy pace. “Things certainly are looking up.” Said Roberto Arjona, General Manager of the legendary Rancho La Puerta Resort and Spa. “We have not seen reservation bookings for our resort like this since before 2008 and we are now over one hundred percent capacity going into next year.”

Environment Friendly fashion

Eco fashion is a term that deals with many issues – from ethical fashion design and production to retail and purchasing. It covers a range of issues including working conditions, exploitation, fair trade, sustainable production, environment and animal welfare. It is about making clothes from organic raw materials like cotton, silk and jute.

Harmful chemicals and bleaches are used to colour fabrics normally but not when eco-fashion comes into play.

Impact Of Textiles And Clothing Industry On Environment

Impact Of Textiles And Clothing Industry On Environment | Eco Friendly Clothing | Scoop.it

By

Lakshmi Challa

It is well known that every customer product has an impact on the environment. However an average consumer does not know which product has less or more impact than the other one. Any product, which is made, used or disposed of in a way that significantly reduces the harm it would otherwise cause to the environment, could be considered as eco-friendly product. Slowly, consumers in India are taking lead in prompting manufacturers to adopt clean technologies to produce eco-friendly products.

The textile industry is shared between natural fibres such as wool, silk, linen, cotton and hemp, and man-made ones, the most common of which are synthetic fibres (polyamide, acrylic) made from petrochemicals. Most of the clo¬thes in our wardrobes contain polyester, elastane or Lycra. These cheap and easy-care fibres are beco¬ming the textile industry’s miracle solution. Howe¬ver, their manufacture creates pollution and they are hard to recycle (with nylon taking 30 to 40 years to decompose). The textile and clothing industry is a diverse one, as much in the raw materials it uses as the techniques it employs.

At each of the six stages typically required to make a garment, the ne¬gative impacts on the environment are as numerous as they are varied. Spinning, weaving and industrial manufacture undermine air quality. Dyeing and printing consume vast amounts of water and chemicals, and release numerous volatile agents into the atmosphere that are particularly harmful to our health.

Bluesign is an emerging standard for environmental health and safety in the manufacturing of textiles. The -Swiss-based organization, officially known as Bluesign Technologies AG, provides independent auditing of textile mills, examining manufacturing processes from raw materials and energy inputs to water and air emissions outputs. Each component is assessed based on its ecotoxicological impact. Bluesign ranks its audit findings in order of concern, and suggests ways to reduce the consumption of resources while recommending alternatives to harmful chemicals or processes where applicable. Textile mills that commit to verifiably adopting Bluesign’s recommendations can become certified “System Partners” and attract business from a wide range of brands and retailers around the world looking for greener vendors.

Organic Clothing and Fair-trade!

Organic Clothing and Fair-trade! | Eco Friendly Clothing | Scoop.it

Organic clothing and why buy fairtrade?

You will find a lot of reasons to purchase Fairtrade items, more importantly is always that Fairtrade guaranteed a much better deal for Third Word producers.

As more brands launch new organic and fair-trade ranges, or expand existing ones, it's obvious that this can be a sector that's not going anywhere soon. Sales of organic cotton are going to triple in the finish of 2008 from the current $900 million level as merchants and types make significant new obligations to sustainable textile and apparel production.
