The future of travel search lies on a Silicon Beach (not in a Valley) | Tnooz

The future of travel search lies on a Silicon Beach (not in a Valley) | Tnooz | eCalendars : the next travel revolution | Scoop.it
After more than 15 years of online travel, we are still looking for the perfect travel search engine. But do four Australian startups hold the key to unlocking the future of travel search?

This is the “fourth phase” of online travel that I have been talking about since 2007.

Four Australian companies are putting a case forward that the future of online travel search will be found on Silicon Beach, rather than Silicon Valley or Alley.

Let me dive deeper into three startups which have featured on Tnooz before, Rome2Rio, Adioso and Getflight, and also the newbie Flightfox.

TechCrunch | Google Now

TechCrunch | Google Now | eCalendars : the next travel revolution | Scoop.it

Google Now is a sort of unifying service that takes everything the smartphone knows about the user, and everything the user’s previously wanted to know, and combines it to keep everything on track automatically. So, when you bring up Google Now by swiping up on the homescreen, you’ll see a list of various cards.

Knowing this, Google Now creates an array of cards that explain that it’ll take 20 minutes to get to work if the user takes their usual bus route, or that they need to leave now if you want to make their flight. Everything within Google Now communicates with the other pieces.

So picture this: you like to work out around 1pm every day, but you happen to have a 2pm flight. Google Now knows that it’ll only take you 20 minutes to get to the airport, and that your flight has been delayed to 3:30pm, letting you know that you can still get your workout in.

Remember Joobili, the travel inspiration startup from Europe which had a nifty user interface and the financial backing of high profile tech investor Esther Dyson?

The proposition was pretty simple: a different way of searching for destination attractions and events, based not on the location but on interests, using some – for the time – interesting web gizmos such as date sliders, etc.

Where does office organization stand in your hierarchy of needs?

Overloaded Circuits: Why Smart People Underperform - Harvard Business Review

Overloaded Circuits: Why Smart People Underperform - Harvard Business Review | eCalendars : the next travel revolution | Scoop.it

Frenzied executives who fidget through meetings, lose track of their appointments, and jab at the "door close" button on the elevator aren't crazy--just crazed. They suffer from a newly recognized neurological phenomenon that the author, a psychiatrist, calls attention deficit trait, or ADT. It isn't an illness; it's purely a response to the hyperkinetic environment in which we live. But it has become epidemic in today's organizations.

When a manager is desperately trying to deal with more input than he possibly can, the brain and body get locked into a reverberating circuit while the brain's frontal lobes lose their sophistication, as if vinegar were added to wine. The result is black-and-white thinking; perspective and shades of gray disappear.

People with ADT have difficulty staying organized, setting priorities, and managing time, and they feel a constant low level of panic and guilt. It is possible to control ADT by engineering one's environment and one's emotional and physical health. Make time every few hours for a "human moment"--a face-to-face exchange with a person you like. Get enough sleep, switch to a good diet, and get adequate exercise. Break down large tasks into smaller ones, and keep a section of your work space clear. Try keeping a portion of your day free of appointments and e-mail. The author recommends that companies invest in amenities that contribute to a positive atmosphere.

Big data is stealth travel site's secret weapon

Big data is stealth travel site's secret weapon | eCalendars : the next travel revolution | Scoop.it

Hopper wants to make searching for travel options a more complete experience using big data tools, and it has raised millions to do it.

Helping consumers make purchasing decisions on factors other than just price is a growing trend that should explode. Personally, for example, whether I’m booking a trip or buying something online, I consider myriad factors, including price, reviews, proximity, capabilities and others. The problem is that these are generally disparate data, so I’m left making mental notes as to which option is connected to which criteria.

Hopper attempts to take the guesswork out of the process for travel search by deciding upon and weighing its own factors, then presenting users with a ranked list. It’s similar to what Retrevo (see disclosure) is doing for consumer gadget purchasing by ranking the best values in each category, complete with a timeline for determining when it will be obsolete. In the travel world, Hipmunk is already using its user interface as a competitive differentiator to help drive engagement.
