NPD Reports US Print Unit Sales Up 1.9% in 2017

NPD Reports US Print Unit Sales Up 1.9% in 2017 | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
Print book sales showed modest growth in the US in 2017, rising almost 2% in terms of unit sales, NPD Bookscan revealed in a press release on Monday. Specific details about the number of units sold, and the price at which they were sold, were not disclosed. NPD is the company that bought Nielsen's US operations, including both Pubtrack Digital and Bookscan, at the beginning of last year. It is not to be confused with Nielsen Bookscan UK, which is a different company. From the press release: Without Harry Potter and other leading franchise titles upping the ante, print book sales in the United States returned to a more standard year for the industry in 2017. Unit sales of books increased 1.9 percent in 2017, which is slightly less than annual growth rates of 3 percent posted between 2013 to 2016, according to global information company The NPD Group. “Returning from the huge sales of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ in 2016, and the rise of adult coloring books, last year’s book sales growth was more modest than the industry has seen in recent years,” said Kristen McLean, books industry analyst for The NPD Group. “Big blockbusters are both a blessing and [...]

A changing book business: it all seems to be flowing downhill to Amazon

A changing book business: it all seems to be flowing downhill to Amazon  | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it

Author Earnings Report Grows Up, Becomes BookStat.com

Author Earnings Report Grows Up, Becomes BookStat.com | Ebook and Publishing | Scoop.it
For a period of about three years (2014 to 2017) the publishing industry was turned upside down by a pseudonymous market analytics expert called Data Guy. His quarterly Author Earnings Report painted a picture of the ebook market that showed just how much was missed by official sources like PubTrack Digital, Nielsen, etc. But then early last year the Author Earnings Report site went dormant. All DG would say when queried was that he was working on a major update. That update is going to arrive later today in the form of a new more comprehensive Author Earnings Report that benefits from leveraging the far richer data feed from Data Guy's company, BookStat.com. For almost as long as DG has been releasing quarterly reports, he has also been consulting with publishers. Those consulting gigs grew into a company which now has a name and a website. DG told me by email that he will be keeping a firewall between the two projects. "Bookstat.com is totally separate commercial business from Author Earnings, with an informal agreement to occasionally provide some aggregate data to AE on a pro-bono basis," he wrote. "Like Bookscan, Bookstat’s customers are generally businesses with at least $10 million in annual revenues, to be [...]
