Importance of E Waste.

Importance of E Waste. | E Waste | Scoop.it

How is E Waste important to us?I am sure most of us have at least heard about E Waste through media means such as radios, the Internet or even the TV.E Waste,or electronic waste, are actually discarded electrical or electronic products. Some examples are moblie phones, computers and refrigerators. But how is it important to us?

E Waste is now the fastest growing form of toxic waste in the world. It is probably no surprise, that considering our current age of technology and computers, eWaste makes up a significant portion of waste on the Earth. However, what is surprising to most people is that eWaste is toxic. How can this be? Electronics are just a casement of plastic and metal right? Well, when we take a closer look at the many different elements that go into making up the many different electronic components and processes used in everything from computers to refrigerators, eWaste is alot more than just metal and plastic.

Some of the toxic substances of eWaste include the heavy metals such as, Mercury, Cadmium and Lead, as well as potential carcinogenic substances like polychlorinated biphenyls. In fact, nearly 70% of all heavy metals found in landfills comes from electronic equipment. On average, computers and monitors are 20% Lead by weight and contain a total amount of Lead ranging anywhere from 4 to 8 pounds - all of which is now steadily collecting as a toxic pollutant to the environment.

So,next time before you throw away an old computer or refrigerator, think about the harm on the environment and the amount of waste contributed to Earth.

This article talks a lot about e-waste and the actual effects on the world. Most of us are unaware of the effects of buying newer and better technology but it does come with a cost. Disruptive technology as we discussed in class provides us with newer technology at lower cost, but what happens with the the old electronics. They end up in landfills contaminating the land and even the water.

Causes of E Waste.

Causes of E Waste. | E Waste | Scoop.it

The main reason of E Waste would be the ever growing technology of this age and the human mentality.. It is estimated that there are over a billion personal computers in the world at present. In developed countries these have an average life span of only 2 years. In the United States alone there are over 300 million obsolete computers. While Internet and computer use in Latin America and the Caribbean lags behind their northern neighbors, this region has experienced a 371% increase in Internet use from 2000-2005. As the digital divide narrows, Latin America must address the question of disposal of large numbers of "end of life" computers and other ICT equipment.

In this modern era technology is growing at lightning fast speed. This technology results in the coming of newer products and appliances. The major reason for this can be none other than MNC's( Multinational corporations). MNC's now a days are so powerful that they can influence the whole market system of a country in no time. it is these mnc's that provide better technology The have money more than the budget of some countries as well. Moreover they have the power to decide price and quality. However, Its not only that MNC's profit when they start a business. Though some sections may be affected, the middle class have started to prosper because the prices have gone down and quality has increased.

Take my friend for example, athough he already have a number of computers and laptops,he still bought new ones whenever newer models came out. Some of them also have 5 or 6 mouses and keyboards despite the current ones are still in working condition. The human mentality make human crave for for newer and better technology and thus creating these E Waste around the world.

Effects of E Waste.

Effects of E Waste. | E Waste | Scoop.it

Now,I am going to talk about the effects of E Waste. We already know the amount of waste produced on the environment, but do we really know the effects produced by E Waste?

You may not think it is important as it doesn’t affect you and push it to the back of your mind, but it affects human and the environment.E waste products produces Lead,Berrylium,Mercury and Cadmium.Lead, is extremely harmful to the body.It can cause seizures, high blood pressures and affects child development. Beryllium, can cause death by extreme exposure. Mercury, poses rick in neurological development of unborn fetuses. Cadmium, causes damage to lungs, kidney and livers. And these are not all the harmful products from e waste.

Many first world countries export all the E Waste that they produce to the third world and developing countries.Which is being piled and treated by the people there. The people who worked there are often poor, and despite the regular exposure to the chemicals which affects their health, they still choose to work there because the pay is better than other jobs.Basically they are trading their health for money, this also shows that the first world countries are taking advantage of them.

Visualise a world where there are piles of computers, refrigerators and such E Waste being piled around us,do you want that to happen?Because that is exactly where we are heading if we continue produce E Waste at such pace.

Thus,we need to think about the effects of our actions before we discard unwanted electronic products next time.

Solutions for E Waste.

Solutions for E Waste. | E Waste | Scoop.it

After knowing the importance, effects and causes of E Waste,we need to stop these. There is still hope for a change by using the 3 Rs.

Reduce,we can reduce the amount of E Waste produced by just purely refrain ourselves from buying things that we already have and are still in working condition. Not only can we reduce the amount of E Waste produced,we can also save ourselves some holes in our pockets.

Reuse,we should not buy completely new computers when it is spoilt or outdated. We can reuse the parts in the computer and just change the old or spoilt parts instead of everything.By doing this,we can save quite alot of E Waste produced.

Recycle,we can simply just donate an operable computer to a local family, friend, school,so that no unneeded e wastes are produced. We should also discard our electronic products to recycle bins especially for E Wastes.Human cost is also something you should think about before discarding before you recycle, find out where your old computer is going. Some companies ship hazardous materials to landfills overseas, while others send equipment to be dismantled by workers in countries such as India and Pakistan, where labor protections are less stringent. Children are paid as little as $1.20 a day to strip toxic equipment, and others scavenge glass, metals, and plastics from e-waste-poisoned dumps.

We can make an effort to stop E Waste by following such simple steps.Stopping E Waste starts from you and me.
