Snøhetta completes phase one of Times Square transformation

Snøhetta completes phase one of Times Square transformation | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

Architecture firm Snøhetta has concluded the first phase of a major overhaul of New York's Times Square, continuing the initiative started in 2009 to pedestrianise large sections of the popular tourist destination.

The $55 million reconstruction project is the largest redesign of the square in decades and encompasses the transformation of five public plazas between 42nd and 47th Streets, which will be entirely reconstructed to remove any traces that vehicular traffic once ran through the square along the Broadway...

London's future skyline captured in new visualiations

London's future skyline captured in new visualiations | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

This series of images by architectural rendering studio Hayes Davidson envisages how London's skyline might look in 20 years time.

Over 200 towers with a height of 20 storeys or greater are planned in the UK capital over the next two decades and Hayes Davidson has visualised how these new buildings will appear alongside existing skyscrapers such as Renzo Piano's The Shard and Norman Foster's The Gherkin.

The images were created for an exhibition opening later this year at New London Architecture (NLA) entitled London's Growing... Up! which will chart the growth of tall building construction in London since the 1960s and look at the impact skyscrapers will have on the city in the near future.

"As London's population gets bigger and bigger, and new development for London takes place within the constraints of the green belt, we have to increase the density of the city," said Peter Murray, who is chairman of NLA and the exhibition curator.

Hideg House by Béres Architects | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

Focusing on sculptural cliffs and hillside woods, Hideg-ház is an unusual object in the landscape of the outskirts of Koszeg, a historical town in Hungary.

The building is located in a country with very diverse climate. Hot summers and cold winters desire a smart mix of architectural decisions to keep the cabin comfortable and easy to run in all four seasons. The clients had a clear concept about what they wanted to achieve in terms of building services and comfort. A combination of high-tec and simple ecological solutions resulted in extremely low energy consumption and moderate building cost...

Marica McKeel is a rising star in the world of Residential Architecture.

“Growing up my grandmother took me to art museums and contemporary art galleries and was a big supporter of emerging local artists. My mother is an engineer and an extremely practical and motivated woman. Both my grandmother and my mother are a great inspiration for me in life and in work.

I find her design clean, lean and right to the point....downright beautiful, and the setting is sublime! The video is also a treat: http://blog.novedge.com/2013/07/the-edge-marica-mckeel.html-

De Rotterdam: OMA Completes Mixed-Use 'Vertical City'

De Rotterdam: OMA Completes Mixed-Use 'Vertical City' | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

OMA today marks the completion of De Rotterdam, a mixed-use, 160,000m2 slab-tower conceived as a ‘vertical city’ on the river Maas. The three stacked and interconnecting towers rise 44 floors to a height of 150 meters and span a width of over 100 meters. Nevertheless, the building is exceptionally compact, with a mix of programs organized into distinct but overlapping blocks of commercial office space, residential apartments, hotel and conference facilities, restaurants and cafes.

“Efficiency has been a central design parameter from day one. The extreme market forces at play throughout the course of the project, far from being a design constraint, have in fact reinforced our original concept. The result is a dense, vibrant building for the city.”

The pavilion designed by Architecture Brio is located on the Magic Bus Centre for Experiential Learning, situated near Mumbai at the foot of the Western Ghats. Magic Bus is an NGO which seeks to educate and mentor children through outdoor “experiential” learning.

The first phase of this project comprising of children’s dormitories, a dining pavilion, volunteers accommodation and a resources centre was designed by Rahul Mehrotra Associates. A challenge course with climbing walls, Jacob’s ladders and zip lines completed the first phase. Architecture Brio was asked to design the second phase of the project, which included proposals for staff accommodation, a facilitation center for corporates and the Laureus Learning Pavilion.

Minimalist High Performance Rowing Centre, Portugal

Minimalist High Performance Rowing Centre, Portugal | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

Rowing High Performance Centre is a minimalist building located in Pocinho, Portugal, designed by Alvaro Andradre. The Rowing High Performance Centre in Pocinho is located in one of the most beautiful and idyllic valleys in the world – the Douro valley – one of the places of choice for champions of this sport. The project is structured into three key components: Social Zone, Housing and Training. The entire project fuses with the reinterpretation of two secular elements of landscape construction in Douro Valley: the walled terraced, a recurrent form of “inhabiting” this place, and the great white volumes of large production units, deployed along the terrain, are formally complex and diverse volumetrically.

Norman Foster-Designed Scheme Aims to Transform London into “Cycling Utopia”

Norman Foster-Designed Scheme Aims to Transform London into “Cycling Utopia” | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

Foster + Partners has unveiled a scheme that aims to transform London’s railways into cycling freeways. The plausible proposal, which was designed with the help of landscape firm Exterior Architecture and transportation consultant Space Syntax, would connect more than six million residents to an elevated network of car-free bicycle paths built above London’s existing railway lines if approved.

“SkyCycle is a lateral approach to finding space in a congested city,” said Norman Foster, who is both a regular cyclist and the president of Britain’s National Byway Trust. ”By using the corridors above the suburban railways, we could create a world-class network of safe, car free cycle routes that are ideally located for commuters.”

Stacking Green by Vo Trong Nghia Architects

Stacking Green by Vo Trong Nghia Architects | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

Description from the architects:

The house is constructed on the plot 4m wide and 20m deep. The front and back facades are composed of layers of concrete planters cantilevered from two sidewalls. To water plants, the automatic irrigation pipes inside the planters were installed. Rainwater is collected in the tank and pumped up for this irrigation system.

The green facade and roof garden protect its inhabitants from direct sunlight, street noise and pollution. According to the post-occupancy measurement of the indoor environment, wind flows throughout in the house thanks to the porous façades and 2 skylights. This result was already proven by the behavior of the inhabitants; they scarcely use the air conditioner even in the tropical climate, their electricity fees are just 25USD per month, thanks to the wind flow and other passive design methods.

Lola Ripollés's curator insight, January 8, 2014 5:39 PM

One of the architectural trends we hope to see more of in 2014 is eco-friendly architecture, and these buildings are excellent examples of that. All over the world, architects are repurposing old shipping containers and turning them into innovative, beautiful houses, hotels, libraries, workspaces, and even seaside observation decks. Shipping container buildings are designed to have a minimal impact on the environment, are cost-effective, and modular designs can easily be moved from place to place. A Modular & Flexible (shipping container) Terminal for the Port of Seville, Spain

A Modular & Flexible (shipping container) Terminal for the Port of Seville, Spain | E s t r a t e g i a s | Scoop.it

The Port of Seville needed a new Cruise Ship Terminal with a flexible character, multipurpose, extendable, easily removable and even movable.

This would permit to accomodate the unpredictable number of passengers in the port and it does not limit the possibilities of the urban-port valuable space of the Muelle de las Delicias. The Port Authority itself proposed to solve the project using sea containers. On the other hand, the place, near the historic centre, was claiming an object of architectural quality that would promote the dialogue between the port and its urban environment.

The on-site construction work could only last 15 days, the maximum time between two consecutive cruises docking. The modular construction with recycled shipping containers would be mostly finished in workshop, ensuring the precision of the on-site work...
