Don’t Leave Learning Up to Chance: Framing and Reflection - MindShift - @Kschwart @JackieGerstein | E-learning and education: web, information, apps, resources, technology, tools, tips. | Scoop.it
Jackie Gerstein is an experienced educator who has been working as a classroom teacher and pre-service teacher trainer for years. With a background in experiential learning, Gerstein is excited about current trends in education that have more people excited to try project-based learning, maker education and other approaches that let students get hands-on with their learning.

She hopes all the excitement turns into robust, meaningful change in how mainstream teachers educate. To do that, she says it’s crucial that teachers not only focus on the materials and tools of a maker activity, but also carefully frame it and reflect upon it to make sure learning happens.

“If we don’t create a process of reflecting and framing them, then we are leaving learning up to chance,” Gerstein said on a panel about makerspaces hosted at the International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE) conference.

The Ultimate Guide to Gamifying Your Classroom | Edudemic

The Ultimate Guide to Gamifying Your Classroom | Edudemic | E-learning and education: web, information, apps, resources, technology, tools, tips. | Scoop.it
Gamification is the process by which teachers use video game design principals in learning environments. The effects are increased student engagement, class wide enjoyment of academic lessons, and high levels of buy-in, even from your most reluctant learners.

When gamifying a classroom there are several things you’ll need to consider. The first is content, as in what are you trying to teach? Like any lesson or unit plan, you’ll need to figure out how to organize and assess new material. You’ll also need to consider your students. What kind of learners are they? What information do they already know? You’ll need to have a basic understanding of your students’ technology skills and how much support each student may need. You’ll want to consider putting together a training manual or some other support system for students who may need extra help. You’ll also need to consider your own comfort level with technology and the actual technology available to you. These considerations may lead you to designing your own game, or relying one a template or already built quest.

Of course, it’s important to protect students’ privacy, especially when using a public channel like Instagram. If you’re interested in trying any of the ideas below, we recommend creating a classroom account that you set to “private” and carefully vetting any potential followers. You might also try adapting our suggestions to an educational social media platform such as Edmodo. Finally, be sure to check your school’s technology policies before you begin.

Why Blogging Is Key to the Future of Higher Ed -- Campus Technology

Why Blogging Is Key to the Future of Higher Ed -- Campus Technology | E-learning and education: web, information, apps, resources, technology, tools, tips. | Scoop.it
A massive experiment at Virginia Commonwealth University involving 7,000 blogs could lead to a new view on how college students learn.
Gaby Vaca's insight:

The use of digital technologies must go accompanied of two things at least: a good instructional planning and the professor’s guide and supervision. Blogging or other type of digital tool that we want to implement in courses must be used with the consciousness of the pursued objective(s)  as we can see in the professor Campbell’s project:

“The ability to work together, making connections across disciplines, creating networks is the essence of higher education. We're trying to make the network explicit to help students demonstrate the connections they're making as they move through curriculum, as they begin to get these higher-order thinking skills.

Faculty benefit as well, as they begin to think of new ways to communicate with and engage students — especially online. It's not simply e-mail or discussion forums or recorded videos. Those things were there too, but the way the instructor's presence could be made almost tangible within the environment was instructive."
